Nobody stops you from opening a thread of your 2 favorite Greatest movie of all time!

All I am saying is that there are not two greatest of anything. There are multiples.

Below is a nice video on Seven Samurai (I posted this somewhere earlier):

Had to stop this vid after 33seconds. Had a migraine attack.

Pray tell me how is this even remotely comparable to DDLJ?

It is not. It is comparable to films like Vertigo!

Some of the names that flashed were of films that are not necessarily relatively speaking mainstream. Here, I want to focus on films with relatively more widespread appeal (steering away from a Jeanne Dielman type of scenario), a long history that stamps their staying power, and preferably from directors with a long resume of "great" work.

Btw, in Nov 2024, and looking at the criteria set in OP, my current pick is Contempt (1963), aka Le Mepris in French. It is directed by Jean Luc Godard who made avant garde films. Contempt is said to be among his most accessible films.

For one reason or the other, I could not finish the film in the past. When it was restored and released in a new 4K transfer, I added the film to my collection. While I was impressed with its cinematography, locations, score, etc., what caught me off guard was the film’s ability to make you feel its energy and generate emotions:

Since the film stars Brigitte Bardot, who gives a good performance, the producers insisted on having her in a nude scene. Shot artistically, JLG opens the film with such a scene. At first, it appears like a move to utilize Bardot’s popularity but when you watch the film, you realize the importance of the interaction in that sequence, and how the situation changed.

 A masterpiece by JLG :hatsoff:
