Batting first holds true if the conditions are going to remain the same throughout, or pitch slow down. But at venues where dew comes in batting becomes easier under the lights, you'll select to bowl first. Example Dubai where batting under lights becomes much easier. Or at Ahmedabad where batting gets progressively easier under the lights with dew. However, there was no such factor or rationale in 2017 CT final for us to merit bowling first.

Against Pak that's the best bet. Score just over par and they crumble. It happened in 92 WC, 96 WC, 99 WC, 2011 WC, and 2015 WC. 2003 WC was the only exception and it took SRT's best odi innings to beat Pak. It's a common theme in ODIs. In T20s I can understand chasing but in ODIs bat against them, put up a decent score, and the match's almost done.

But Josh Hartnett aka Pat Cummins saw through it and elected to bowl first leading to that haunted look in ACP Rohit Sharma s face..

This trap would have worked fine, if India had risked going with a flat pitch in first league match in Chennai against AUS. The 1st match of the World Cup, AUS as usual opted to bat first on a slow turned and bundled out for 191. Despite Australias record of batting first in knock out, the trap was made obvious in the final because of this . In addition, AUS due to IPL had local knowledge of conditions. Since there won't be pitch tampering in 2024 t20 final, India playing to its strength should win albeit a close match

This would have still worked had bumrah not bowled a no ball which costed fakhar zamans wicket.

Very true. In an alternate universe, that delivery isn't a no-ball and Fakhar goes for a duck (or was it 1?), and Pak are bowled out for 180 odd with India chasing it with 7 wkts in hand.

 

But IMO the decision to put them in wasn't the right one. There was no dew factor, conditions would've remained almost the same. So why not bat first on a batting beauty and bat them out of the game? Anything over 260, Pak are unlikely to chase.
