Domestic Players with 50+ batting average who never got a chance to play Tests

This is not a recent phenomenon, lotsa of 80s and 90s were called Ranji dadas, were never picked for the national team. Fab 4 costed a lot of players in the late 90s to 2010s for a decade. Even a MO bat like Sehwag had to open to break into the side

Yes but Fab 4 were consistent. And we did give chances to fringe players occasionally and they were exposed. Likes of Sadgoppan Ramesh, Vikram Rathore, Badrinath etc. were given chances and they looked fish out of water.

 

But Jurel, Sarfaraz, Rinku have performed and look like they have the potential to belong at the higher level but haven't been backed. It's almost like the team management is waiting for them to fail so they can be sidelined just like Karun Nair.

Disappointed with Sarfaraz in the NZ series , didn’t feel he could have made a difference in Aus. But Jurel showed a lot of potential, he has to be given chances over the likes of Gill. pant, KL, certainly. ruling out diamonds like RoKo in this list, as  they will not be dropped

I would've given them a chance. Sarfaraz still scored 150 in an innings against NZ. Sarfaraz averaged close to 100 across 3 Ranji seasons and deserves to be backed. Same with Jurel. I would give both of them a long run. They deserve it. Along with them I would add Sai Sudarshan and Rinku as the players which need to be backed after the oldies have been sunset.

Agree that Sarfaraz's technique might not appeal to purists and he did badly in that last Test. But he deserves a longer and more consistent run. It seems like Rohit Sharma was just wanting for Sarfaraz to fail so that he can bring back his favorite Rahul into the team. As soon as Rahul is picked in the squad, he gets a preference over Sarfaraz despite doing squat.

I agree. If you have identified a player please don't discard him without giving a propose run. England series we saw 4 players Sarfaraz, Patidar, Devdutt and Jural. Before we go hunting for a 5th name we need to give these 4 a proper look in.

Baba Indrajith, Dhruv Shorey, Rinku Singh all deserve a chance even now as they aren't that old. Players like Michael Hussey made their debut nearing 30 and had a wonderful career. Gilchrist made his Test debut when he was 29. India handed Patidar at the age of 30 so Indrajith can still get a chance. Need to keep an eye on Pradosh Ranjan Paul as well as he averages 59 in 24 FC games. Small sample size comparatively.

Shivam Dube also averages 50 in FC cricket with a bowling average of 21. He could make a good number 6 batsman and we know that he can also score quick runs. His bowling, though lacking in pace, could be handy in seaming conditions. Could be considered as an alternate to Nitish Reddy, who didn't do much bowling in Aus.
