Ram Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 It will be a travesty to separate the current opening combo of Gambhir and Sehwag. They compliement each other really well. Both are really attacking, but in different styles, which is why the opposition generally find it tough to contain them. They have been doing well off late, which is why we can think it isnt a good decision to separate them. But we must keep in mind, both these players have been prone to form slumps, especially Sehwag. Sachin may not look that aggressive, but he has been mighty effective in ODIs in the last year. His technique will be handy in opening in seaming conditions. Personally, I would bring back Sachin and make Gambhir go to no.3, which was what our line-up was, during the CB series. Besides, Sachin isnt going to play ODIs for too long more anyway.
Desi Cartman Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 SRT is always needed. The current openers are doing well but SRT brings in his experience , it'll be stupid not to use him if he is available. I do think that SRT should play selective ODI series and all test series !

atul Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Most flat wickets records can not make them automatic choice , no doubt they are playing superb but let balls swing or seam for initial 10 overs, I'm still not convince with Gambhir technique and sehwag is always lottery so we might see 2 for 20 often against good opposition then we have Sharma who take lot of time to score initial runs and then throw his wicktes at 30/40.

satishg Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Sachin is still needed in this young team. We have not yet faced a stern test to come to the conclusion that Sachin is not needed anymore. So if Dhoni's boys do manage to win a big tournament in the absence of Sachin then v can atleast start pondering over this op. Sachin is anyway gonna pick and choose the tournaments he wud be playing so the transition has begun and it is going in a smooth way. And wen a stiffer challenge comes up v all know whom to count upon. He is still the boss in ODI cricket :icflove:

Predator_05 Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Don't let a few wins against rabble like Banglastan and Pakidesh fool you into thinking that this Indian team can cope without Tendulkar. India will need him more than anyone when they play a top class side like Australia or South Africa. Think back to all the big series India have played against AUS or SA in the last year or so - Tendulkar top scored in almost all of them. The two 90's in the Future Cup when India won 2-1, and then the home series vs AUS, and of course, the CB Series. India won't win the ICCT without Tendulkar. Gambhir is in the form of his life at the moment, so it's safe to say that he will score runs anywhere - as an opener or as a #3. India don't lose anything by demoting him. Sehwag will always be the kind of player who scores nothing or scores big - more often the former than the latter. Sure, he has been scoring runs at the moment but that's because he is playing his favourite team, thereby putting memories of his numerous failures (remember the CB Series, where his highest score was 33) at the top of the order in the back of people's minds. If Tendulkar is fit again, i'd rather drop Sehwag and pair him up with Gambhir. That would bring India closer to seeing an opening combination as good as the Tendulkar-Ganguly duo was many years ago.
