My main source of information has always been my Dad and Zafar Iqbal/Mohammed Shahid etc mean more to him than Kapil/Sunny/Sachin put together. In fact one of the worse memory of my childhood is seeing him follow '82 Asian Games on radio and have India walloped 8-1 or so in finals, that too in the hands of Pakistan. I suppose that was the final nail of Indian hockey. Even today if there is a major game he will cut the schedule from newspaper and hangs on the fridge, then calls me to let me know its on. You are quite correct that it has been relegated as a Regional sports. Most of the players today come from Punjab, Orissa/Jharkhand, Mumbai/Goa and Southern States and thats that really. Probably the only place in India where hockey is bigger than any other sports is areas of Chotanagpur(Jharkhand/Orissa border) but I dare say even thats taking a hit thanks to Dhoni phenomenon. xxx 8-1 is quite bad indeed... i was not even born then and thankfully so i guess. on a similar note, how come we did not qualify for the olympics this time? and more importantly, how come argentina did not qualify? i thought outside the dutch and germany, they were the finest.
Gambit Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 yeah... hockey is lately center stage since my brother played at the national level in his last year of highschool. they wont telecast the hockey matches here, but i used to follow them when i was in india, not just in the olympics but in the asian games as well. i think it was the 1998 asian games in seoul where in the round robin league matches we beat south korea and i was absolutely over the moon... only to be heartbroken when less than a week later, we lost the final! Your memory is pretty poor. We won the Asian Games gold that year by beating SK in a nail biting penalty shootout. That's one of the four hockey games I've ever watched on TV. And boy, was it a memorable one!

That's one of the four hockey games I've ever watched on TV. The names of Shahid, Zafar Iqbal, Tikken Singh, Thoiba Singh, Pargat Singh & MohinderPal Singh are entrenched in my memories forever. Besides Shahid, Pargat Singh was a phenomenal player. He was a defender, but had the athleticism of a forward. There was one match where he picked up the ball and dribbled the length of the field. The one that I remember the most was a a 6-3 pasting of Pakistan in Hyderabad (India). I vividly remember listening on the radio; the neurons in my mind's eye can still play back images of Shahid dribbling through those dirty green shirts. Thanks for bringing those memories back! PS: We lost 1-7 in the 1982 Asiad, and the goalie Negi was much reviled in the media.

Zafar Iqbal and Mohammed Shahid made a formidable pair and was probably the last great pair that played for India. In many of the games the two gents would come in their own in the very dieing moments of the game and slam goals one after the other. Unfortunately the literature on Indian hockey is practically non-existent and so we cant find much. I do remember a game against Holland where India were down 0-3 and then the duo smashed 3 goals in 5 minutes or so. Incidentally Zafar Iqbal was made infamous for not being able to score off a rather easy chance in 1984 Olympics that led Indian ouster from the Olympics. SRK's Chak De India role borrows a bit from Zafar Iqbal as also Negi, two fallen hockey heroes of the time. Of the rest mentioned Thoiba Singh was my favorite. Was very fast. Pargat Singh was pretty darn solid as well. MP Singh I could never be a big fan of. Somehow he was like Anil Kumble, solid and dogged but no eye catching skills. xxx

I cant seem to find it on YouTube though I did find Mile Sur Mera Tumhara(another classic).

I would think she could possibly be Diana Eduljee, India cricket captain, who used to appear often in such videos(she is there in Mile Sur Mera tumhara as well). Apparently the hands on the keyboard towards the end are his and I have read from many unconfirmed sources that this whole music piece was his baby. And yes you can see both Bhimsen Joshi and Bal Muralikrishna in here(apart from Kamal Hassan, Malika Sarabhai etc)

I just realized that our hockey team did not even qualify, and that is a huge dampener. I hope we win some medals. At least those athletes will get some monetary rewards, government jobs etc.
