He's not a natural T20 player and has to pre-meditate a lot to score quickly. I think it is the reverse. As the Indian test calendar is so sparse at the moment, the only hope of him getting into batting rhythm is via T20 which is the only meaningful cricket being played. He won't have any other games to develop his game. That;s the reality of the T20 obsessed BCCI setup. Other players have used T20 to jumpstart test careers like Warner, Bairstow etc so it is totally possible that a good IPL helps him as a test batsman as well.

He can try to get better at T20 but some players are not meant for that format. Pant isn't like Pujara or Dravid but he still bats in a traditional manner in the sense he needs time to get in and then attack. Modern T20 doesn't provide any time for players to get set and Pant struggles to get going as soon as he comes in. He's an amazing Test player and can potentially be a difference maker in ODIs but I don't think he can compete with the youngsters coming through in T20s. We can't even fit in Jaiswal and likes of Suryavanshi are already knocking on the door. Samson and Kishan are already way ahead of him in T20s so it makes sense for Pant to focus on longer formats else he risks losing spots in other formats too.

Think its okay if he is trying to sort out his game, this was much needed. If he think Yuvi can help him that is good too. He got time off, hopefully he has worked on his batting , pre accident he was not a white-ball batter, but post accident he lost the footwork too. Think Ind just brought him back too early, should have let him recover completely and work on his batting again. Right now his feet are planted and he just swings. In this 5 decades he is the only Wk batter who has cracked the test format, he should work on it improve his batting add off-side game and need to star moving his feet again. Had this been 10-15 ago after cracking tests he would have cracked white-ball too, but white-ball game as changed alot, there is lot of data on each an every player, so players like rishab will find it difficult. It does not matter if he is looking to improve his batting for t20s or odis what matter is he understood there are gaps and he needs to fix it, it should help him in tests too. But for white-ball Ind should develop a new set of wk batter and develop couple of test wk batters under rishab Ultimate_Game and BacktoCricaddict 2

But it shouldn't happen at the cost of his Test performances as that's what sets Pant apart. tapandrun 1

My point is that it is nor feasible if there is not enough longer format cricket being played. For a player during the peak years of their career, it is unrealistic that they set their highest level of aspirating to one test versus afghanistan in June. You may have written off the player from the T20 format but top players want to prove people wrong and they will keep vying for a place. there is nothing wrong with that. New guy 1

Lack of international cricket and limelight does seem to be affecting his test batting too

I'm not against them not trying to improve in all of the formats, especially the biggest money-earner (T20s) but I want them to have enough self-awareness to know not to sacrifice their USP and what makes them the best trying to prioritize T20s over all others. Not all of the players will be great at T20s like we're seeing with Pant, Sundar and even Jadeja who had been lucky so far by being close to CSK and Dhoni all this while despite his pathetic stats (SR of 110-120 as a lower order batter). Pant should improve his T20 game and in fact it would be a red flag if he doesn't try to but at the same time he needs to realize what makes him the best. He's the best long format wk-batter since Gilchrist and he shouldn't compromise it no matter what. tapandrun 1

There is no long form cricket being played till June and even that is one test not of a particularly high standard. You are treating it as if for him to play T20 in the meantime is going to negatively impact his test match form while the actual issue is the reason his game might be impacted has more to do with the lack of any long form cricket being played for him to feature in. We have enough examples of batsmen using T20 to rediscover their touch and make a strong return to form. Ultimate_Game 1
