Ultimate_Game Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Was looking at his stats and he has turned a corner starting last year. These are his stats across all formats in domestic for last season... Ranji Trophy: 543 runs at an average of 60.33, including a double-hundred in the semi-finals Vijay Hazare Trophy (50 overs): 725 runs at 90.62, with four hundreds in nine innings Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (20 overs): 309 runs at 61.8 and a strike rate of 167.02 Haven't seen such a turnaround and if he continues these performances he needs to get ahead of Sai Sudarshan and Gill in the Indian setup. I'm glad he turned it around and have to appreciate the effort he put in to revamp his game. Here's a great article about him from Cricinfo... https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/ipl-2026-rcb-vs-srh-a-devdutt-padikkal-the-world-had-seldom-seen-before-1529590 tweaker, BacktoCricaddict and cricketfan28 3
tapandrun Posted March 28 Posted March 28 (edited) Do not think there is anything special about it, look at his overall career (domestic). His FC avg is still ~40, and his T20 sr is ~135. His best format has been 50-overs where he has been consistent performer, avg 80+ and sr 90+. The record shared above is just for 1 season, he has been playing in the top order of one of the major domestic side such number would come in one of the season. As for Sai ,he was fast tracked too early in the side he too needs to play more domestic. Issue with ddp is whether he is intnl quality or not , against 140+ kmph he gets late often, against good spin he can not score and gets out. Ind has time for the wc sure try him in the middle order in the Odis see if he can manage, he has basic power game has 13-14 List-A tons so knws how to score run has a double-ton too so can play at high tempo. If he can fit in then it solves 2 issue back-up opener and a mo LH batter Edited March 28 by tapandrun

He's doing enough to be short-listed and may take some time for him to break through into the team. If he continues this positive trend may get a break.

Those who have 50 test avg. would have 60ish FC avg.. Going by this he will be 35ish avg test player , do not think Ind needs that. Do not think there can be any debate that he can even make to c level Ind t20i side. Now the only format left is 50-overs where his List-A records are unmatched, he is 25-26 yo, next odi wc in in 16 month when he will be 27-28 yo if he does not make a cut to that , then next wc will be 4 yrs after when he will be 31-32 yo what is the point of him sending to development phase now. Its either he is good enough to play now or not. Can selectors and tm trust the IPL and List -A and give him a run before the 2027-Odi -wc or not?? Ind has nearly 30 Odi before the wc. can he make a case for himself??? Edited March 29 by tapandrun

I wish selectors go for youngsters in ODIS too instead of oldies just like they did in T20. We've so many youngsters in their prime and yet we have 3 40 year olds in playing XI. That's the reason we're struggling in ODIs and have lost to Aus and also NZ to home in ODIs. Plus we need lefties. IMO we should hand the reigns to Gambhir and give him carte blanche and he'll kick out the seniors. Gambhir is a winner in white-ball cricket and hand him the keys for 2027 WC instead of carrying oldies.

V.late fr that if that decision was to made it would have been done just after the wc, takes time for players to develop. Plus wc is in SA so even newer player are not guaranteed if given chances now will they be able to perform directly there, its asking too much frm them. Have to work with what they got, so all 5/6 batters are same as wc-23 , will need to find a LH mo batter hopefully he bowls and a fast bowling allrounder and pace-bowling. Pace bowling is more concern fr the world cup in SA, Ind only has Bhumrah and Siraj as top level bowler and you do not fully know how bumrah's availability and siraj has been declining

The current lineup is all right-handers and Jadeja down the order. Our limit is 280-320 with this team. And we don't need that much time to bring in folks as it's not the old time where players had to take a lot of time to establish themselves. With IPL and A tours, most of the players can adapt to intl cricket much faster and most of the options (Jaiswal, Tilak, Sai, Padikkal, Ishan, Parag etc.) have played for India anyways so playing ODIs won't be a big deal. The current team is long in the tooth and full of right-handers and it'll come back to bite us in the ass at some point. We need an injection of youngsters and preferably lefties at the top. The top 5 of Gill, Rohit, Kohli, Iyer and KL Rahul looks ancient and other than Iyer others are questionable. Gill and KL Rahul are a softies who won't show up when going gets tough, Rohit is a slogger and barely lasts PP overs and in ODIs a 25 ball 35 isn't the same thing as a quick start in T20s, and Kohli is still guided by milestones as we saw yesterday when he was still knocking singles to crawl to 50. Plus Rohit & Kohli are semi-retired and they would be semi-retired for nearly 3 years when the WC arrives. At max you can carry one such player but 2 is a disaster waiting to happen and we don't really need them based on the players available to us. And then we have Jadeja who has been useless in LOIs especially lower down the order and can't hit at all and his bowling has dropped off and won't be a factor in South Africa. Unless selectors intervene we'll struggle to reach semi finals and Bumrah will lose his last chance to win the ODI WC when the same core has been responsible for letting him and the bowlers down for the last 2 editions. I'm sure a younger, fearless lot would've done better in both 2019 WC SF and especially the 2023 WC final as we saw with the T20 team.
Vk1 Posted March 29 Posted March 29 apparently Devdutt had some health issue and lost 10 kgs or so sometime back leading to those low SRs Ultimate_Game 1
Jamadagni Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Not intl level. He has a strike rate of 20 against short balls. 20........enough said.
maniac Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Like his batting style but he will crap it at international or go to tuk tuk. Still missing that extra “zip” or extra “it”. Will watch out for the whole tournament to change my mind. tapandrun 1

We've been wrong with likes of Dube, Ishan and Samson as well. I like players who work on their shortcomings and get better. He has put in the hard work and improved. Let's see how he continues to perform but if he bats the same way, he deserves a shot.

tapandrun Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Do not think he has place even in Ind-C t20i side. He has been out standing in VHT (ListA) sure try him in Odi before the wc. They have given him Test debut, T20i debut not Odis the only format he is good at. His IPL sr of below 130, and his FC avg is 40~ <-- not his best formats. This is why Ind selectors are confusing the formats, he is good at 50 overs , thats the only format he should have been tried but they sent him to test and t20i , and in both those format he does not look like a batter who can play intnl. level bowers be it pace or spin.
