Sometimes the Obvious Choice Feels Ignored — The Yashasvi Jaiswal Question

Someone once said Yashasvi Jaiswal has the hitting power of Abhishek Sharma, the grit of Virat Kohli, and the class of Shubman Gill. The more I watch him, the more that line sticks in my head — because it genuinely feels true.

 

As a regular fan — not an expert, not a selector — I sometimes wonder what more this guy needs to do to lock his place across formats. To me, if India has produced a true all-format player in recent years, it’s Jaiswal. He looks like the kind of cricketer who could fit into almost any team in the world — whether it’s the Australia team or the South Africa  team — and still make an impact.

 

What honestly confuses me as a fan is seeing him miss out from the T20 or ODI sides of the India national cricket team from time to time. I look at the lineups and sometimes scratch my head. Again, this isn’t about disrespecting players like Shubman Gill (ODI) or Ishan Kishan (T20) — both are very good players and have delivered in big moments. But purely from a fan’s point of view, Jaiswal feels like someone who should be among the first names picked, not someone fighting for space.

 

Maybe I’m missing something. Maybe selectors see technical details or team balance factors that fans like me don’t fully understand. But when you watch Jaiswal bat — the confidence, the hunger, the way he takes on bowlers — it feels obvious that he’s a special talent.

 

Sometimes I sit there watching and think — are we overcomplicating things? Do we sometimes hesitate to back obvious talent strongly enough?

 

At the end of the day, this is just a fan’s honest confusion, not criticism. I just hope players like Yashasvi Jaiswal are backed consistently, because talents like his don’t come around very often — and when they do, they deserve trust, patience, and a long run.

Yes.In Jaiswal case ,the team management wanted Gill to be the next superstar and didn't wanted any competition.

Jaiswal got frustrated and was even close to leaving Mumbai Ranji team.

 

In his IPL team also Parag was preferred over him as the captain

There are many factors beyond technical details,team balance.

 

Sarfaraz should have been ideal no 4,5 test batsman for India against Australia, England and other test but Jurel,Paddikal,Nair,Sai, Patidar were preferred over him inspite of scoring 150 against New Zealand

In t20i -- Who would you drop fr jaiswal ???-- his competition are Abhishek, Vaibhav and Arya

 

Odis --Once Rohit decided he is not going to retire and selectors having faith in him , there was just 1 spot left. But at the same time they also took away rohit's captaincy so Ind needed a captain and due to many reason, cricketing and non cricketing gill was made the captain, now there is no place for jaiswal in the 11 and he can only be the back-up  opener. But then there is a catch too for back-up opener here team is looking for some who can be dual utility --some1 who can play both middle order and open too.

 

He is 24-25 yo, wc is in 15 months and after wc both kolhi and rohit will retire and he will get to open in odis too by then he will be 25-26. Think that is a fair deal for him.

Is it a fair deal to the Ind team????-- thats a diff ques going to wc with 2-3 ~40 yo players ...?? But the points that goes in rohit and kolhi's favour is that they are still scoring ~50 avg and 90+ sr in odis in last couple of years so its not like they are just dragging , they have performed

test-- He is already the main opener ..

 

The only issue is that he is not in Odi playing 11. rest t20is its obvious there are better choices avialable and for test he is the main opener.

 

TM and selectors does not want to challenge rohit+gill's pos. in Odis that's why once (before Abhishek) Jaiswal was the main t20i opener and was main test opener and who not even getting to debut in the Odi, think he could have been the only batter who was main opener in test and T20is but not odis.

Odi is the issue of contention 

I am not in favor of all 3 format players it's too much and india already has good options with vaibhav waiting Jaiswal and gill can give up 20-20 ambition

That was more a political decision to have the Guwahati connection since Parag plays for Assam. Plus his dad is an ex-cricketer and has connections locally. Poor Jaiswal has no backing from anyone when even phuddus like Gill have godfathers.

He will get his chance in ODI's after the retirement of Rohit/Kohli 
For T20I, Even if Samson flops,  there is a competition between Vaibhav, Arya and Jaiswal..Mostly Vaibhav is preferred as he is the next superstar.

Once our seniors retire, ODIs are just going to be an extend T20 where batsmen keep hitting and not looking for longer innings and 100s.

 

Teams will be stacked with batsmen and pitches will be much flatter.

He isn't that hitter either ,he slows down after PP

As many proper batsmen they have that in their DNA to build innings,he too has that(nothing wrong though)but in T20 s it's a major red flag
