how braindead are the south zone selectors picking worn-out 125 km/h medium pacers does absolutely NOTHING for the future of indian cricket east zone is just as hopeless dragging out shami and mukesh because their talent pool is completely dry outside of maybe ishan porel but south is an absolute circus a 35-year-old nidheesh and a domestic journeyman in milind who thought that was a good idea and why on earth is siraj burning himself out in a regional game this entire duleep trophy selection is pure unadulterated malpractice

Won't blame Gill though. Without Gill i don't htink Gurnoor would have even gotten into club side in his state. He is the one who groomed him. He spotted him first then got a place in shield team.  When he got a disc fracture and which almost terminated Brar's career Gill once again helped him by having him as a net bowler for GT in 2023/24.

A lack of national oversight, shifting leadership across the zones, contrasting selection philosophies and an informal quota-based system have again diminished the Duleep Trophy’s value as a bridge to the Test side. The prevailing system was installed after several state associations complained to the BCCI that the selectors were ignoring performers in domestic cricket, a board official told this daily.

“The national selectors wanted to try those they felt had the potential to play for India A or India, even if they hadn’t played Ranji Trophy. But the associations felt that the selectors if they wanted to try those players, then they should pick them for India A. The state and selectors were at loggerheads,” he explained.

 

So it was decided that the zonal committee would pick the Duleep Trophy teams while the national selectors would chalk out the A squad. “If a national selector wants to try any player they straightaway pick them for India A. If any national selector has a good equation with state selectors, they put in a word with them for particular players,” a BCCI official said.

Why won't someone blame Gill?  Changing tactics at the eleventh hour sounds foolish and shows he can't take harsh calls even when selectors and coach are backing him. 

 It blew up on him perfectly in the end with the result. It's the same situation with Rohit as well. Gill cannot muster the courage to pull the trigger... I am sure GG and Agarkar are on the same page that a washed Rohit cannot be taken to WC at Jaiswal's expense or heck even Vaibhav.

Irani Trophy was historically the tournament that played the role in national team selection. Then under-19 took over in 2000s. Later IPL. So Performance here in Duleep trophy counts for nothing anymore. I say Ranji gets more attention than Duleep Trophy.

Most of the times these decisions are not straight forward in the backroom. Only MSD had that kind of power. Gill is likely a puppet poster boy.

One thing is sure. Boy can pull crowd. Chepauk was seemingly half full to watch him bat. I am sure they were not there for others. 12000 people watching Duleep trophy final is probably due to him.

GG has significant power within the BCCI, two ICC titles have given him enough leverage and that's why him and Agarkar pulled the trigger on SKY instantly.

 

Gill likely vetoed the call to drop Siraj for the sake of yaari dosti... And he was panicking in PC when he was asked about Siraj's lackluster showing in the series.  He probably knew he made the blunder but tried to justify with some non sense he blabbered.

 

Post this I doubt Gill and Agarkar would leave big decisions on him alone.  Dummy and dumb captain package

I bet even Kohli would do the same. If you leave out SIraj and if it backfires backlash will be evenmore.  That is how the optics is.
