theguyinallblue Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 i saw the first episode only...while having dinner...and could not digest my food..:haha: its utter rubbish...the first drawback is the dresses of these characters... its complete contrast with what we generally associate with Kings and princes... Kekta has dressed them like Romans... the characters are basically the same coterie of Balaji Group... its bound to fail... There has been many mythological serials..based on Ramayan, Krishna, Ganesh Ji and Mahadev Ji ..etc..but none has been as successful as Ramayan and Mahabharat were...

Characters, costumes, dialogues, acting et al were perfectly chosen in B.R.Chopra's Mahabharata. Gambo, is there any website where we can find out who are the characters that Ekta has chosen for Mahabharata ?

I dont know about casting ...[/quote'] BR chopra made Mahabharat, which was definitelt better than Ramayan which was made by Ramanand Sagar. I don't how EK will match the earlier version, but going by her track record, I assume it will appeal to only her fans and not universally. Are Indian TV dramas the worst of all? That are only targetted for women in their 60s and children under 8. Beech ka to care kartein nahin..they will be watching cable channels from USA, I guess.

Whenever she is asked about her shows having similar storylines/masala, she would very proudly respond "you don't have to watch my shows (directed towards men), they are only intended for women". She has completely ruined Indian television viewer's taste and lowered the bar of expectations for good. I don't know how can aunties watch all of her shows as they have a similar storyline but different set of characters.
CC1981 Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Here is my review of the first few episodes i saw: 1. The costumes are far better and the set is splendidly made. Believe it or not, the depiction of shantanu with a headband and romanesque armor is more authentic than the BR Chopra version. Not many know, but for eg, Roman style swords and body armor was actually made in India (this is proven historically- Roman steel originates from India) 2. Special effects are horrible : While the graphics are fairly well done, it is over-emphasized and overdone and that makes it far cornier than the low-tech clumsy stuff of BR Chopra. That whole 'Ganga showing she is Ganga' scene should've been 2 minutes long, not 10 minutes of same special effect looped with the monotonic 'har har gangey' chant. 3. Acting cast is weaker from what i can see so far. While BR Chopra's costumes, set and special effects were distinctly third class, his show was a massive success because he picked the cast spendidly. Characters such as Bheem, Bhisma, Krishna, Draupadi, Kunti, Duryodhan, Shakuni, Gandhari, etc. were picked with almost robotic precision and they grew into their role perfectly. So far,this crew lacks the charisma and cast isnt that good- so far, only Ganga is as good as the old ganga but then again, Ganga's role is very easy to do: A beautiful lady acting classy and like a Goddess... 4. 30 minute episode is a massive mistake- should've been 1 hour long episode. With modern day adverts eating up 1/3rd of the screen-time, what essentially becomes a 20 minute show is a very poor timeframe for a story that has gravity to it and is essentially there to teach humanity about human archetypes. Lot of character development and personal insights get left out and the frentic pace of the show makes a lot of their cast seem flaky rather than from a distinctly different era. 5. Lastly, for those who think we should cast the best of the old show in their own roles: Bheem, Krishna, Bhisma etc., how is that going to work ?That series was shot in the late 80s/early 90s: almost 20 years ago. I don't think makeup is good enough to potray a 45 year old Bheema pretending to be 15 and making fun of Karna in the arena and a 50 year old Krishna stealing Rukmini... PS: Ronit Roy is the young Bheesma, not Bheema.
