Ok. I haven't seen the Dark Knight yet and those who do pronounce Ledger as the greatest, please no spoilers! For me, two stand out. Gabbar from Sholay sholay2.jpg and Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men nocountryforoldmen.jpg Neither of them have a shred of decency or goodness in them. Both are remorseless and immoral killing machines. Gabbar, however, is 0.0000000000000001% more human than Anton, who is simply bone chillingly evil.

Heath Ledger was just awesome. I know Anton was great in that role with no heart no emotions but Heath woah mindblowing..go see it to know it..

Amon Goeth (Schindlers List) Max Baer (Cinderella Man) Joker (The Dark Knight) Frank Costello (The Departed)
Really? Goeth is a good choice though. Another one would be the bad guy from Pan's Labyrinth.

I agree that no.2 and 4 are not really exceptional villians at all

I personally think the greatest villian of all time in western movies is Anthony hopkins in the movie silence of the lambs. Greatest hero would be easily Atticus in To kill a mckingbird or indiana jones.
