Temujin Khaghan
if there is a highest sporting honour in the country, and sachin got one... shouldn't kumble recieve one too. I dont know about you guys, but i feel that kumble has done a superb job in test cricket - 600+ wickets is not a joke. Just because he doesn't have a huge fan following or isn't glamorous enough doesn't mean he doesn't deserve one. Maybe they will give him one after he retires, but he should have got one before dhoni did. Link to comment
Kartikey
definitely, i think its pathetic that the BCCI forwarded the name of Dhoni who has done nothing spectacular in Test Cricket. This is such an insult to players like Kumble, Dravid, Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Ganguly and Laxman. Link to comment

Dhoni has hardly been around for 3-4 years and he gets bestowed this award. What shambles? Link to comment
DomainK
I fully agree. There are many cricketers who deserve it before Dhoni gets it. Kumble tops that list. Link to comment
Chandan
Board initially thought of Arjuna for Dhoni Vijay Tagore Tuesday, August 05, 2008 04:32 IST MUMBAI: Mahendra Singh Dhoni has succeeded where Rahul Dravid has failed. In fact, where Yuvraj Singh has also failed. The conferring of Rajiv Khel Ratna by the Indian Government on Indian ODI and Twenty20 captain has ended a kind of award drought for the Indian cricketers. It has been learnt that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had recommended Rahul Dravid’s name for the Khel Rata for the last two years but the Indian Government, rather the Union Sports Ministry, did not approve the recommendation. Last year’s the BCCI had also sent the name of Yuvraj for the Arjuna but the the the government shot down the proposal. Disappointed, the BCCI decided to send in an unputdownable name this time around. Initially, the BCCI dabbled with the idea of sending the Jharkahand player’s name for the Arjuna but after a lot of deliberation they decided to recommend him for the Rajiv Khel Ratha, the highest award for a sportsperson in India. The thinking behind nominating the Indian stumper’s name for the Khel Ratna was the P-factor. The BCCI, obviously thinks, Dhoni’s performance this year has been outstanding. Twenty20 World Cup and CB Series are rare highs in Indian cricket history. “We wanted to send a name which is difficult to be ignored,†said Ratnakar Shetty, the Chief Administrative Officer of the BCCI, told DNA. “We were disappointed the last two years that no cricketer was given any award.†This time the BCCI did not name anyone for the Arjuna. However, the names of Vitthal Patil and Chandu Borde have been sent for the Dronacharya and Dhyanchand awards, respectively. The two proposals are believed to have been accepted by the Sports Ministry. An announcement is expected soon. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So Dravid's name was not accepted for the award for two years. Still it doesn't explain why Kumble's name was not sent!! And what is P-factor? Link to comment
Dirty_South
And what is P-factor? Performance factor ? Link to comment
Ram
Which idiot in the judge panel refused to give the award to Dravid? Link to comment
CSK Fan
These awards are given on PER yr basis and is not a lifetime awards. Like stated above, Dravid was nominated twice but other sportspersons did better. This year was Dhoni's yr. Cant blame BCCI or Dhoni Link to comment
punjabi_khota
If 600 wickets in no joke, 10000 test runs isn't either. Link to comment
beetle
The reason given for Dravid's name being rejected was that the BCCI submitted his name too late.... Obviously...the BCCI wouldn't waste any time submitting the name of it's favourite show pony! Link to comment
beetle
By recommending his name ...BCCI has shown it's future intent. 20/20 it is !...and rest be damned. The performance in 20/20 is most important....who cares about tests. The guy who got this award is moonlighting as dance show celebrity........who cares about tests? The show pony is too precious to be wasted in tests. Link to comment

Zap_Brannigan
Its pathetic that khel ratna is awarded to mediocre sportsmen who cannot excel in major sports arena..Look at the list of people who got it. Why did leander deserve it? He was never the best in the world. Neither was anyone else in that list cept Anand and Sachin. Cricket is the only world class sports we excel in and cricketers like Dravid, Ganguly, Kumble from the current batch has deserved it more than gopichand or anju george or pretty much anyone in that list. Dravid, Gangs and Kumble have been the best or one of the best in the world for atleast a few years in their career. They deserve it more. Leander won 1 bronze in the olympics in a sports no one care about in olympics. When leander won, how many players from the top 10 took part? Leander and Mahesh were the best in doubles for a while but again, doubles in tennis is not as high profile as singles. Link to comment
