So when I was asked to cover the midnight launch of the Apple iPhone 3G in India, it didn’t really seem worth sacrificing my sleep. I walked half-heartedly to the Vodafone store in nearby Connaught Place, hoping to see frenzied youngsters jostling for vantage position outside its shutters. I had read horror stories of people abroad queuing up 60 hours ahead of schedule for a chance to buy the iPhone first. There was jostling all right, but only among photographers and journalists. There was not a customer in sight. Till midnight, the media was cloistered inside the store in New Delhi listening to a live band and staring aimlessly at the wall. At a minute past, the action started. The first buyer was handed the iPhone. He grinned and posed interminably for photos and the news channels. Then the second, third and fourth customer appeared in quick succession. All of them didn’t mind paying 31,000 rupees ($712) for a phone including some features that don’t even work in India, because the country doesn’t support 3G services yet. I step outside for a breath of fresh air. A stray dog saunters past — flummoxed by the hubbub no doubt. There are no curious onlookers nearby. Is India really aware the iPhone is out today? Do the majority of its people really care about the high-tech smartphone? Maybe the outlet launching the iPhone in a Gurgaon mall has done better. Or maybe Indians aren’t really impressed by a phone when inflation is above 12 percent. Either way, I need to catch up on my lost sleep. Here’s wishing the Apple iPhone 3G better luck over the weekend.

Of course you can text message on the iPhone. I also have an app on my iPhone that lets me record videos, so it's not impossible. The camera is low, but not that bad for a phone cam.

abey pappu holy baba, i am talkinga bout INdia. offcourse no one would bloody buy in usa if u can't sms. in India i am talkinga bout, which has been launched just yesterday. i was watching this 30 mins special program on headline today, an Indian english news channel and they told about these negative things to start with this phone. the price being the first and then the sms, and then the 3g thing which isn't carried by vodafone and air tel yet but soon they will be carrying.

abey popat cricketics baba, why dont you check your facts, rather than trusting stupid channels like that. Do u seriously think any company is going to launch a phone in 2008 that doesnt support SMS? You think people are going to buy a phone in India without an SMS feature? Let me tell you that people use SMS in India waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than they use it here. What were you watching? that stupid Aaj Tak? or the English version of that? Price is an issue, and a big one, yes. SMS thing is just bull sheet which these dumass 10th pass reporters bring out 3g will be out in India soon, but that isnt a problem with the PHONE, it is a problem with the NETWORK. To put it in baby terms, the phone is too advanced for the network in India.

AGREED. I once started texting here, without explicitly getting the text service plan. My next month's bill went up from $48 to $75 , those mofos charged 20 cents per message, incoming and outgoing. WTF!!!!!!!!! I had no idea and learnt the hard way..haha. Now I use their $5 for 200 messages thingie.

Oh, and by the way, the 199 price here is after the carrier subsidy. You cannot compare that to the price you get in India, as there are no carrier subsidies there. Lets put it this way. My friend got a sony walkman for 1 cent from amazon.com recently. That same phone costs 12-14 thousand in India.. what a rip off....

email ? but not everyone here (especially the near and 'dear' ones here) has email enabled phones..dude, I use the crappy razor and will prolly use it till it stops working or I break it or whatever. :giggle: Email just doesnt cut if you want instant communication...

P1i.jpg
