Badrinath to lead India 'A' squad vs Australia in India, Sept 2008 Tamil Nadu batsman S Badrinath will lead a 15-member India 'A' squad which will play two three-day matches against a visiting Australia 'A' side next month. More... Australia A in India 2008 Sreesanth named in India A squad Cricinfo staff August 23, 2008 365593.jpgS Badrinath, who made his ODI debut in the second match against Sri Lanka, will lead India A against Australia A © AFP Sreesanth, the India fast bowler, has been included in the A team that will play two three-day matches against Australia A in September. Sreesanth, who was suffering from a side strain, last played for India during the home Test series against South Africa in April. He picked up the injury during the Indian Premier League and has since missed the Kitply Cup, the Asia Cup and the tour of Sri Lanka. He wasn't named in the Champions Trophy squad either, so the games against Australia A will provide an opportunity for him to make a comeback. S Badrinath, the Tamil Nadu batsman, was named captain of the 15-man squad instead of Mohammad Kaif, who led India A on their last major assignment, against South Africa A in 2007. Badrinath is currently with the Indian ODI squad in Sri Lanka. The surprise exclusion from the side was that of Delhi opener Aakash Chopra's, who scored 1339 runs at 60.86 in the previous first-class season. He was a member of the India A side that beat South Africa A in an unofficial Test in Delhi last September. The other match was washed out in Dharamsala. Chopra had scored 239 not out in the Delhi match, and followed it up with a prolific Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy season. He was the second-highest run-getter in the Ranji Trophy, and the leading run-getter in the first-class season overall. "I am surprised, and disappointed that I am not being rewarded for having scored consistently in the first-class season," Chopra told Cricinfo. "I was really looking forward to playing against a testing opposition that Australia A would surely be." Robin Uthappa and Piyush Chawla, who were dropped from the squad for the tour of Sri Lanka, were included in the 15-member squad. The first match against Australia A will be held in Bangalore from September 3 to 5 and the second game will be held from September 9 to 11 in Hyderabad. Squad: S Badrinath (capt), Parthiv Patel (vc), Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Mohammad Kaif, Cheteshwar Pujara, Robin Uthappa, Piyush Chawla, Sreesanth, Vinay Kumar, Sudeep Tyagi, Dhawal Kulkarni, Mohnish Parmar, Sahil Kukreja, Amit Mishra.

So what? Make the best of it. India's just named a very good A side. Get people like Badri and Kaif ready to face Australia and familiar with some of the opposition and tactics, in case they need to step up in the series if others fail. Mishra can have a chance to bowl to Katich and co., and there are a lot of kids who will REALLY make a huge statement if they can deliver in this series.

Why did we not choose Manoj Tiwari instead of Uthappa? What on earth has Uthappa done? But for that matter, even Tiwari hasn't done much in the previous season, both in the domestic cricket and on the A tours. Who are the bowlers in this squad? Piyush Chawla, Sreesanth, Vinay Kumar, Sudeep Tyagi, Dhawal Kulkarni, Mohnish Parmar, Sahil Kukreja, Amit Mishra. Seam bowling is not in very good hands and I wonder why Vijay Yomahesh was excluded! He needs these kind of tournaments to improve himself. He is certainly much better than Dhawal Kulkarni. And I forget what Sahil Kukreja did to be selected and same with Mohnish Parmar who has a suspect action. Such a dearth of off-spinners is extremely sad! Why don't we choose left arm spinners instead?

Where is Murali Kartik? Have we given up on him or something?
Wasn't he playing for Middlesex? Even if we do not want to take him in the A tours, there are a number of other left arm bowlers! Why can't we choose them instead of a chucker like Permar? To be honest, I'm not happy with this squad. This is not our second 15, as it should have been, being our A side!

Interestingly enough, the bowling seems to be heavily statistic based - specifically wickets taken last season. Vinay Kumar, Mohnish Parmar and Tyagi's selections have come purely from their performances this season and India 'A' stalwarts like Yo Mahesh and Pankaj Singh have been discarded - while VRV Singh still fails to find a place in the side despite a very strong domestic season - has he simply jumped straight into the Test squad? The inclusion of Uthappa and Kukreja ahead of Chopra is baffling to say the least and perhaps suggest that Chopra's India career is over as the selectors feel that he cannot 'handle' Australia, as shown in his tour to Australia in 2003/4 and that improvement has not been sufficient to warrent changing this opinion - a sad state of affairs. Someone like Uthappa who is only an average FC player should really not be anywhere near the Test team and it is a travesty that he is - heck, he didn't even have a good FC season this year! Dhawal Kulkarni has not even a FC game under his belt and they put him in the squad? On what basis? On his IPL performances?! Please don't say on his U19 performances?!

By the way ... I was speaking to VRV singh at my university the other day (he was in sydney recently)' date=' and he said he was training for the upcoming Ranji season. I dont think he was expecting a spot anytime soon.[/quote'] He hasn't done anything to expect a place even in A squad. But why has Vijay YoMahesh been discarded? If we need to keep growing the list of bowlers for test matches we must groom this fellow as our 7th or 8th option. Right now we have following bowlers for tests: Zaheer Sreeshanth RP Singh Ishant Munaf And for ODIs we have above bowlers and: P Kumar Pathan If we want to increase this list of bowlers we have to include YoMahesh, Pankaj Singh and then Tyagi, Vinay Kumar etc too. In batting too we have to find at least 4 solid middle order batsmen who could be ready to play tests at any given time. This squad doesn't give me an impression that our selectors are working or even thinking in that direction.
