Lud, senate is that 2 senators from each of the 50 states are elected into it. The number of representatives from each state depends on its population, and these guys will be elected into the house of representatives. Both form the infamous Congress.

House has 438 seats (distributed based on population of state).... makes total of 538 seats from all over country.. candidate need 1 more than half of those 538.. which makes 270 to win presidency.. ... Senate is considered as upper house IMO.. No..it does not work like that. Congressional seats have nothing to do with the Presidential election. The way the Electoral college works is different. Based on the population of each state, a certain number of "electors" are allocated to that state, for example California the largest state has 54, New York 31, Florida 27, Illinois 21, Ohio 20 etc. Smaller states ( population) like North Dakota, Wyoming etc have much lesser "electors", like 3, or 5 only. The sum of all these "electors" across 50 states equals 538 electors or its called electoral college. The candidate who gets more votes in any state gets the entire electoral votes of that state ( with the exception of just 2 small states), its a winner take all in all the other 48 states. So if a candidate gets just 1 vote more in California than his opponent,he gets the entire 54 electoral votes of California. In order to win the Presidency, a candidate has to get a simple majority of the 538 electoral votes, that is 270 electoral votes, that is what the number signifies. In this system, it is also possible for a candidate to get lesser popular vote across the country, but still win the presidency.

He rose from humble beginnings to the most powerful office in the world. For that, and for being a really good family man, he has my respect. Congratulations, Sen.... err... President Obama. I hope you change your mind on some important issues when you see the world through your Presidential eyes :-)! I think it is also apt that we thank Senator McCain for his tireless service to the nation. He has made sacrifices in his younger days that deserve our gratitude. Finally, I thank the posters on this board who put up with my barrage of disagreements with Obama's politics.
