Desi Cartman Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 GURGAON: A lunch-hour 'pastry-eating competition' among colleagues at an MNC office in Gurgaon turned into a grim tragedy when one of the 'contestants' choked and died after eating too much, too fast. ( Watch ) Saurav Sabbarwal, 22, working as solutions engineer with Nokia Siemens Networking, was declared 'brought dead' at the Max Hospital after colleagues allegedly found him unconscious in the office washroom. Saurav, a resident of Patparganj in east Delhi, was taking part in the pastry competition at the office cafeteria when he suddenly felt unwell and went to the toilet, police said. "They were all having fun when Saurav went to the washroom around 1.30pm. After he hadn't returned for a long while, his friends went into the toilet and found him unconscious," said Satinder Kumar, SHO, Udyog Vihar police station. It's not clear whether it was an informal bet among colleagues or an eatsing competition organized by the company. Officials from Nokia Siemens Networking refused to speak on the incident while police said they were investigating the angle. Dr Sushum Sharma, medical advisor at Max Hospital, Gurgaon, said food had entered Saurav's windpipe which caused the death. "Saurav had stuffed himself with so many pastries so fast that his windpipe was choked. In fact, when we put him on the resuscitation machine, foodstuff was coming out of the windpipe. There was no way air could have passed through to his lungs," he said, adding that it was difficult to guess how many pastries Saurav had eaten. Dr Sharma said the hospital got a call from the company around 2pm. "They said a patient was being sent to us as he had fallen unconscious. Even though his heartbeat had stopped and pupils had dilated, we hoped against hope and tried to revive him. But it did not work as he was already dead," he said. An FIR has been lodged under Section 174 of CrPC (unnatural death) and police said a postmortem will be conducted on Wednesday morning. Saurav's father, R K Sabbarwal, who works as a manager at Punjab National Bank, Rajendra Park, Delhi, was inconsolable with grief. "My son was such a lively and fun-loving boy. He had joined this company only in June this year. In the afternoon, when I got a call that he is no more, I almost passed out. My world has come to an end," said the distraught father. He also alleged that it was carelessness on part of the company which led to the tragic death. (:(((:((

How can any one stuff their windpipe and not know food has entered ?Normally if even a little bit goes in....it causes so much trouble. btw...cute picture Rajeev!
Guest HariSampath Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 Sad accident...wish he had been careful. @beetle....yes food can go down the windpipe a bit more than we imagine. I think that two way opening between the windpipe and the gullet, Epiglottis which opens up only one way at a time, can allow all the food going down the throat/windpipe while swallowing. Usually when it happens to us while we eat normally, we "choke and cough", and very small bits in the windpipe are thrown out by the expulsion of air. But if there is plenty more food being swallowed rapidly, there is a chance of this happening. Apparently this guy was swallowing stuff in big amounts and at great speed, so I am not surprised. Gap between life and death seems so narrow :-(
CC1981 Posted November 20, 2008 Posted November 20, 2008 What i find so ridiculous is that in an office full of so-called 'smart, well educated people', not ONE knew the Heimlich manuever to clear choking. It is such a simple and effective manuever that it works for practically ALL cases of choking except when the food is literally piercing your windpipe ( ie, fishbones). And Hari, you couldnt be more wrong - even minute amount of food entering the windpipe is coughed up. If you swallowed an entire mouthful of food down your windpipe, you'd cough till you turn blue.

It is such a simple and effective manuever that it works for practically ALL cases of choking except when the food is literally piercing your windpipe ( ie, fishbones). . He didn't ask for help,just went to the washroom and then they found him unconscious. I am sure some one would have helped out with that manouver if he looked in trouble.

What i find so ridiculous is that in an office full of so-called 'smart, well educated people', not ONE knew the Heimlich manueve Its not so ridiculous when you consider that this man had gone to the toilet , and had died there within 1-2 min...I am sure there wouldnt have been anyone present with him there , with expert knowledge of the Heimlich maneuver ...it was quite some time before they even realised he was missing, and he was long dead.

Because the human digestive system is built in such a way that before you can over eat to that extent, you will automatically throw up. If the pastry had entered his wind pipe because of hurried swallowing, he would have got into an immediate coughing fit. Since that did not happen, we can assume that the digestive pipe got so stuffed with pastry that it in turn choked the wind pipe. Its all bizarre. May be he gulped so fast that the digestive system did not get the time to react.

I just showed this to half a dozen doctors ( my and my brother's personal friends) and they all had a good laugh at your ignorance. Regardless of how fast you push the 'food' down in windpipe, you will start choking horribly with even the slightest amount of food in the windpipe, because the cilia in the windpipe is reflexively designed to induce regurgitation/choking at the slightest stimulus from solid objects as small as grains of sand. That is the unanimous viewpoint of all the docs i showed this so therefore, yet again, you pull this straight outta your @$$, in a topic you are yet again a total nincompoop to comment on. Par for the course, i'd say.

To add to that the company escaped without legal liability
