The impression from cricinfo in that Umesh Yadav has a fair bit of pace about him and has noted Pankaj Singh and Sreesanth bowling hostile spells' date=' adding that to the scores and this seems to be a very good pitch for cricket.[/quote'] Yes read that myself today about Yadav..hes played cricket for just 2 years!!:omg: Another interesting info is that he bowls wide of the crease..will be keeping an eye on him for sure.

The joke that is Duleep Trophy 2009 1. There were 9 overs left in today's match between CZ and SZ, with Central 9 wickets down and having lost all chances to chase down the highly improbable target with Kaif's dismissal. The captains decided to call off the match as a draw!!! Really, is it so tiresome to bowl another 9 overs to register an outright win, however meaningless it may be? 2. I was thinking of putting up the Superselector for the knockout rounds of Duleep Trophy, but guess what North Zone has not announced it's squad yet, with the match scheduled to begin 3 days later. I googled to find out what's going on and they had a meeting on Jan. 17 for the squad but said they will announce it after India's squad for SL is decided. Well, it's been days since that happened!!

Oh, none of you wrote about the day's play when I was away? Ok, I'll try to do it since the 1st day of South vs Central match, even if it is 5 days late. South Zone v Central Zone, Duleep Trophy, Bangalore, 1st day Karthik blitz helps South recover to 329 Cricinfo staff January 22, 2009 Central Zone 30 for no loss trail South Zone 329 (Karthik 153, Suresh 58*, Umesh Yadav 5 for 76) by 299 runs Scorecard 330169.jpgDinesh Karthik scored 120 of his 153 runs in boundaries © Getty Images Dinesh Karthik's stunning century transformed the tempo of South Zone's innings as they recovered from a hopeless situation at 86 for 6 to a healthy 329. Their last four wickets added 243 at a rate of almost 5.5 an over as Central Zone's bowlers, particularly their spinners, were at the receiving end of a ruthless counter-attack after being on top for the first half of the day. Umesh Yadav, the fast bowler from Vidarbha, finished with figures of 5 for 76 and was the most impressive of his team's bowlers, accounting for the big wickets of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman to seize the early advantage before having it crushed by Karthik's blazing innings. Umesh - who picked up his second five-wicket haul in his fifth first-class match and averaged 14.60 before this - came on first change, and bowled incutters with relentess frequency, and also unsettled the batsmen with the away swinger and the odd bouncer. He came into the act after fast bowler Pankaj Singh had removed the openers, who gave South Zone's innings a sound start. Robin Uthappa was harsh on anything bowled on his legs, stroking four boundaries on his way to 22 before edging Pankaj to slip off a ball that swung away. Pankaj then got rid of Abhinav Mukund, who was prolific in the Ranji Trophy, but struggled in his innings of 13, surviving a couple of close lbw shouts before being caught-behind. Mukund's fall triggered a middle-order collapse: South lost their next four wickets for 33 runs in 15 overs, as the experience of three of their most experienced batsmen failed to measure up to some quality fast bowling by Central - and Umesh in particular. Dravid was caught when an inside-edge onto his pads lobbed up to short midwicket and Laxman played an irresponsible waft away from his body to an outswinger to be caught-behind. Badrinath edged a catch to slip while reaching for a drive facing Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who impressed in the Ranji final, and soon enough South were in danger of being bowled out for under 150. Karthik, though, executed his plans brilliantly. He went berserk in the second session as no bowler was spared in his 113-ball blitz; 120 of his runs came in boundaries. He rode his luck, surviving a couple of close lbw calls and a tough chance dropped at slip by Murali Kartik, and treated spinners with disdain, using the slog-sweep against the turn with aplomb. Karthik was ably supported by R Ashwin - who top-edged a pull two balls after Umesh brought in a short leg - and M Suresh, whose contribution of 58 also involved an important couple of partnerships with No's 10 and 11, adding 39 for those two wickets. Suresh was solid in defense and his innings was laced with some well-timed off drives and his most preferred shot, the cut. Karthik eventually fell to Umesh, holing out to mid-off but not before averting an embarrassing capitulation on a pitch that eased out considerably after lunch. Balaji followed to a comical misjudgment, ducking to what he though was a bouncer, only to find his middle stump pegged back. The Central openers played out the day to add 30 runs before the close. Another POV Dinesh Karthik blast rescues South .C. Vijaya Kumar Blitzes to a big century after Central seamers rattle the top-order 2009012361402001.jpgWHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH... Dinesh Karthik gets going! The South Zone wicketkeeper’s hundred helped his team end with a respectable total after being jolted by the Central Zone seam attack. Bangalore:By the time South Zone captain VVS Laxman trundled off the field, after edging a Umesh Yadav delivery to wicketkeeper Naman Ojha, his team’s famed batting line-up had all but folded up at 86/6. Dinesh Karthik was unbeaten on two at the other end. William Shakespeare famously insisted that the better part of valour was discretion. But Karthik seemed in no mood for literature lessons on Thursday, as he proceeded to decimate the Central Zone bowling with a hurricane knock of 153, which included a remarkable 24 fours and four sixes, and drag his team total to a respectable 329. Dinesh Karthik walked in when the South Zone innings was in a shambles and shadows flitted across his illustrious batting colleagues’ faces. At 81 for five and the Central Zone seamers finding allies in swing and bounce as well as batsmen who poked around, Karthik played a splendid counter-attacking innings that yielded him not only 153 runs (112b, 24x4, 4x6) but also helped South score 329 in 73.5 overs in the Duleep Trophy match that commenced at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday. In reply, Central Zone was 30 for no loss at close. Self destruction After V.V.S. Laxman opted to bat, South ran into the seam trio of Pankaj Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav (five for 76), who bowled with zest and accuracy on a pitch that had its initial share of good bounce. The batsmen lunged into their shots and found a clutch of grateful fielders. Openers Robin Uthappa and Abhinav Mukund perished to Pankaj after their 46-run partnership while Rahul Dravid, moving on to the front foot against Umesh Yadav, ended up lobbing a bat-pad catch. The 21-year-old Umesh was the pick of the seamers as he extracted good pace and bounce despite a deceptively short run-up. It became worse for South as Laxman, his deputy S. Badrinath and Arjun Yadav all perished while fencing around the off-stump. Morning glory The story of the morning, though, was Vidarbha seamer Umesh Yadav, who combined excellently with pace partners Pankaj Singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and used the bounce on the wicket to perfection. Little-known right-arm medium-pacer from Vidarbha, Umesh Yadav was the star for Central Zone against a star-studded South in the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal at the M Chinnaswamy stadium. Yadav took five for 76 including the scalps of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman on a two-paced pitch as South Zone, opting to bat first were bowled out for 329. Central replied with 30 for no loss. Openers Robin Uthappa and Abhinav Mukund struggled against the new ball, and both fell to Pankaj Singh, caught behind. Dravid was caught bat-pad by Parvinder Singh at backward short-leg, before Yadav accounted for Laxman, who managed to find an edge to a wide delivery. “The pitch was two-paced, but once the ball lost its shine, it was easy,” Karthik said. Lunch must have tasted just perfect for Mohammad Kaif and his boys, who required just four wickets to settle the issue. But Karthik feasted on the Central bowling instead, smashing 137 runs off 91 balls he faced in the second session. South Zone ended up scoring 188 runs for the loss of two wickets, after finding themselves 106/6 at lunch. The spinning combination of Murali Kartik and Piyush Chawla found little joy and came in for some heavy firing, as Karthik leapt out of his crease to hit them over the top and through mid-wicket. Chawla suffered the most, as he was hit for three sixes off consecutive balls in his fourth over. Critical partnerships And as the scoreboard wobbled, Karthik played his shots after enjoying a reprieve on 39, as a diving Murali Kartik failed to latch on to a tough chance at second slip off Pankaj. This was the only chance that Karthik gave the Central bowlers when he glided a Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivery towards the slip-cordon, and Kartik, who had grasped two smart catches earlier in the day, grassed a difficult chance low to his right. Karthik initially cut his way past the fielders before stringing a bouquet of drives as he nursed two critical partnerships — 58 for the seventh wicket with R. Ashwin and 146 for the eighth with a resilient M. Suresh (58 n.o.). Karthik’s belligerence was evident in a four and six he clattered off Bhuvneshwar and the three consecutive sixes off leg-spinner Piyush Chawla. Karthik eventually fell to a lofted shot but by then he had helped the South total attain some respectability. Team-mate R Ashwin and Andhra leg-spinner Marripuri Suresh played stellar supporting roles to Karthik’s fast-paced solo. First, in a comparatively sedate partnership, he added 58 runs with Ashwin, before launching into assault-mode, as he combined with Suresh for a 146-run stand, which came off 100 balls. Suresh remained unbeaten on a solid 58 as the last wicket fell, which was also his fifth first-class half-century. “There was nothing premeditated about my innings. I came out looking to play my normal game, but wickets started falling all around me, and I had to look for quick runs,” said Karthik, after scoring his fourth first-class century of the season. India’s last tour to Sri Lanka in August last year proved to be one of the low points of Karthik’s career, when he looked at sea against Mendis & Co. “Forgettable is the right word for that tour. I have moved on,” he said. And, on the basis of this knock, it definitely seems like the spunky 23-year-old wants to white-ink those memories in a hurry.
