Round-up of Ranji Trophy one-day tournament, 8th day : Mishra's six spin Haryana to victory Punjab tame HP, Delhi on top Chopra, Nagar star as Delhi top North Zone with 19 points; Amit Mishra's six for helps Haryana rout J&K Rajesh Sharma Una DELHI DEFEATED Services by six wickets at the Indira Gandhi Stadium here. Batting first, Services, who scored 2318 in 50 overs, owed it to openers RK Pandey and T Khan (55). The duo put on 72 for the first wicket. Yashpal Singh was the highest scorer with 57. Yogesh Nagar emerged the most successful bowler for Delhi with three wickets. In reply Delhi got to 233 for , the loss of four wickets with 4.1 overs to spare. Akash Chopra scored 95 in 129 balls while Mithun Minhas got 54. In another match, Haryana beat J&K by 125 runs. Haryana piled up a massive 302-9, courtesy Sunny Singh and Sumit Sharma, who both scored 84. Sami-ullah Beigh claimed four wickets for J&K. In reply, Amit Mishra's six for 25 ensured J&K were skittled out for 177 in 42.4 overs. Shafiq Khan was the lone bright spot with 62. ---------- Subhash Rajta Dharamsala HIMACHAL'S WINNING streak finally came to an end with Punjab inflicting an eightwicket defeat in their last match of the North Zone competition. The defeat means that Delhi, who defeated Services by six wickets, finish ahead of Himachal at the top of the table. With four wins under their belt, Himachal needed to beat Punjab to take the top spot, but their chances were dashed when they lost five wickets for just 17 runs. Young Punjab seamer Siddharth Kaul sliced through the top order and finished with an impressive six-wicket haul. In the early morning conditions, made even more favourable by the slight drizzle before the match, he made the batsman play at each delivery and was duly rewarded. At 17 for 5, it looked all over for Himachal, but they picked themselves up and fought back through resilient half-cen turies from Ajay Mannu (72) and Sarandeep Singh (50). The duo not only thwarted Punjab's efforts to finish off the innings quickly, but also helped their team put up a modest 205. Himachal needed early breakthroughs if they were to make a match of it, but it wasn't their day. Openers Ravi Inder and Vishwas Bhalla began fluently and soon took the game beyond Himachal. Playing his first match of the competition, Bhalla made the most of the opportunity by smashing an unbeaten hundred. Uday, elder of the Kaul siblings, helped himself to another half century to ensure Punjab's easy win. Punjab failed to qualify for the knockout stage for the second time in succession, and this doesn't augur well for the state. Though the exodus to the Indian Cricket League has weakened them, there are other areas which need to be addressed. Knock out phase TN to meet Orissa, Delhi takes on Rlys. KOLKATA: South Zone champion Tamil Nadu and North Zone winner Delhi will open the campaign of the all-India inter-state Vijay Hazare Trophy limited overs tournament at Agartala on Saturday. With the completion of zonal qualifying tournaments, a clear picture has emerged with 10 teams making it to the knockout championship. The biggest casualty of the qualifying rounds was the elimination of last year’s champion Saurashtra. On the other hand, last year’s runner-up Bengal topped the East Zone leg and will be seeded No. 2 at the bottom of the fixture. West Zone champion Mumbai will be the top seed in place of Saurashtra and heads the top half. Himachal Pradesh is the surprise packet. It finished second behind Delhi in North Zone. The opening day’s play will see Tamil Nadu being challenged by East Zone runner-up Orissa and Central Zone runner-up Railways facing Delhi on Saturday in two pre-quarterfinal games. After a day of rest, two quarterfinals will be played on March 2, the teams involved will be Himachal Pradesh (N2) and Uttar Pradesh (C1) in the top half and Hyderabad (S2) and Baroda (W2) in the bottom half. The winner of TN-Orissa game will take on Mumbai (W1) in the third quarterfinals (top half). The winner of Delhi-Railways will play Bengal (E1) in the fourth quarterfinals (bottom half) on March 4. The semifinals will be played on March 6 and the final will be on March 9. Matches will be played on two grounds, Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Stadium (enclosed) and Tripura Institute of Technology ground. Agartala, the capital of Tripura, has hosted Duleep and Deodhar Trophy matches in the past, but never a tournament of this stature. The fixture: February 28: Orissa vs TN (PQF1); Delhi vs Railways (PQF2). March 2: HP vs UP (QF1); Hyderabad vs Baroda (QF2). March 4: Mumbai vs Winner of PQF1 (QF3); : Bengal vs Winner of PQF2 (QF4). March 6: QF1 vs QF3 (SF1); : QF2 vs QF4 (SF2). March 9: SF1 vs SF2 (final) ------------------------------------------------ Does anyone know how the seedings are done and PQF teams decided in this tournament? For example why does Delhi have to play it when it has topped its zone and why not Mumbai? Anyone has any idea whatsoever about how it is decided?

Entrance test for Delhi For Delhi, who face Railways on Saturday in the pre-quarters, it's a question of doing something notable after winning the Ranji Trophy in 2007-08. For their rivals, it's a chance to do well since winning this competition in 2005-06, reports Atreyo Mukhopadhyay. More... Entrance test for Delhi Atreyo Mukhopadhyay, Hindustan Times Agartala, February 27, 2009 First Published: 23:16 IST(27/2/2009) Last Updated: 23:19 IST(27/2/2009) No multi-storeyed buildings, no malls, clusters of bamboo trees bordering small hut-like houses on both sides of the narrow road bending gently, the drive towards the Tripura Institute of Technology ground on the outskirts of the state's capital wasn't what the domestic cricket crowd comes across very often. That is one of the two venues where the final phase of the national one-day championship starts on Saturday. Having hosted the odd Duleep and Deodhar Trophy games apart from the seasonal Ranji Trophy fixtures, this is the biggest cricket show this tiny state will experience firsthand. Eager eyes instead of ones used to watching top domestic teams was something else that stood out on the eve of the competition. This tournament is not of immediate importance with the Indian ODI team already in New Zealand and the next ODIs coming after a bombardment of T20 cricket. Still, there is a lot play for. For Delhi, who face Railways on Saturday in the pre-quarters, it's a question of doing something notable after winning the Ranji Trophy in 2007-08. For their rivals, it's a chance to do well since winning this competition in 2005-06. The other teams to be in action on Saturday, Tamil Nadu and Orissa, have contrasting goals. Tamil Nadu have done well of late and sent a number of players into or around the Indian team. But they haven't won anything, while Orissa have lost the spark after reaching the Ranji Trophy semifinals at the turn of the century. 28_02_2009_023_007_009.jpg So there will be a lot to play for from the opening day. "You can't always have these tournaments just ahead of selecting the team for international matches," said TN coach W.V. Raman. "That doesn't mean lack of motivation. Performance here will keep the players in the reckoning." Raman's Delhi counterpart Vijay Dahiya felt playing a pre-quarterfinal this was better than being among the four teams seeded directly into the quarters. "It's an advantage to get a game more. You get a longer run before the big games," said Dahiya. There are individual goals too and Delhi's Virat Kohli with Tamil Nadu's S. Badrinath would try to win back their places in the national squad. Missions collective and personal, to be launched in front of stands where entry is free, the knockout stage of the domestic one-day chapter begins amid expectations ranging from moderate to great.

Kohli is class, I vehemently disagree with the BCCI policy of picking talent early rather than having them on an even plain in domestic cricket but Kohli shows that one can excel at both. Playing against Sri Lanka, he was not spectacular, but showed an ease at international level, the only test now is to see how he does outside subcontinental conditions.

Results---Day 9, Pre Quarter Final Orissa v Tamil Nadu : Match abandoned without a ball bowled Delhi defeats Orissa by 2 wickets (with 9 balls remaining) Reports Delhi and Tamil Nadu enter quarterfinals Orissa ousted without a ball being bowled Chopra and Kohli help Delhi qualify TN win, Orissa fume after groundstaff gaffe Nadim Siraj Posted: Mar 01, 2009 at 2337 hrs IST While Delhi held their nerve to get the better of Railways, the day’s other pre-quarterfinal match between Tamil Nadu and Orissa was abandoned due to wet ground conditions caused by overnight rains. The TN boys, by dint of a superior net run-rate in their zonal campaign, were declared winners and they will take on Mumbai in the quarters . However, the washout was not without controversy as the officials called off the match at 1.10 pm with some time left for a 20-overs-a-side match. But the umpires decided against fitting in a 20-20 match. According to Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) officials, the groundstaff had inadvertently left the crucial bowling run-up areas of the ground uncovered at night. The covers on the wicket and the outfield protected much of the field, but the bowling run-ups were left soggy due to the lapse, eventually forcing the umpires to abandon after three hourly inspections. No wonder the Orissa players left the ground fuming and their captain and coach refused to speak to the media after crashing out of the tournament without playing the match here. Tamil Nadu deservedly earned the nod, having secured an enviable net run-rate at the zonal phase, in which they won all their matches with a bonus point. But the groundstaff gaffe has exposed a few chinks in the organising capabilities of the TCA, as the day’s other match — Delhi vs Railways at PTI Ground — saw match officials and players complain over food arrangements. Delhi’s hunger for win Delhi looked as if they would have to literally run on empty while chasing a daunting 305-run target against Railways on Saturday after the hosts failed arrange the food in time. Delhi manager Ashok Vaswani was furious. “This is inexcusable. After fielding for 50 overs in the heat, the players obviously need to eat during the break. But for almost 20 minutes, there was no sign of the food,” Vaswani told The Sunday Express. And when it arrived at last, it was allegedly improperly served. “They served it in plastic buckets, which is unhealthy,” said Vaswani. “We don’t even need to complain to the match referee, for he too was at the receiving end.” Sarabjit Singh, the match referee, concurred. “Let alone the lunch, the breakfast was poor too. And now this. We, the match officials, haven’t eaten well. I will definitely make a note of this.” It all unfolded in front of the TCA president, Nirmalya Kumar Dutta, who was at the ground. “It shouldn’t have happened. Someone down the line goofed up,” said the TCA president. The late lunch didn’t satiate Delhi’s hunger for runs as Virat Kohli smashed his fourth ton of the tournament and captain Aakash Chopra hit his second century as the duo shared 222 run partnership for second wicket. Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the remaining matches with a finger injury.

Chandan. I heard Orissa vs TN game was supposed to be shown on Neo cricket yesterday had it not rained. So what's on the schedule guide? What games are going to be shown on Neo in India???
They are very inconsistent about putting the schedule up beforehand. So I even stopped checking it. Once I check it again, I'll post if there are indeed some matches to be shown!

Preview : QF, first round UP favourites against HP; Tough task ahead of Hyderabad facing Baroda THE SECOND day of action in the national one-day championship on Monday pits Uttar Pradesh against Himachal at the Maharaja Bir Bikram Stadium. In the other match, Baroda and Hyderabad travel to the Tripura Institute of Technology on the outskirts of the city . It looks a tough but not impossible task for Hyderabad and Himachal Pradesh to get past Baroda and Uttar Pradesh respectively in the quarterfinals of the all-India Vijay Hazare knockout one-day tournament here on Monday. The two, having finished second best in their zonal leagues, can take solace from the fact that they begin as underdogs and will certainly play without pressure. UP vs HP Uttar Pradesh, one of the most improved state sides in domestic cricket, has the talent and hunger for success. Led by India discard Mohammad Kaif, U.P. will like to repeat its success in Ranji Trophy in this tournament as well. Barring Uttar Pradesh, none of the teams boast of big names but the competition remains important because at stake are semi-final berths. Going by form and resources, Ranji Trophy finalists UP seem to hold the edge against Himachal, who made it to the Elite Division this season. However, nothing should be taken for granted as Himachal scored a win over Delhi in the zonal phase. “It will be fantastic to make the final or win the tournament,†said Kaif. “We have the hunger and purpose to achieve our goal. We decide upon a plan and execute it with efficiency. This has given us success in the past.†Himachal have a good mix of homegrown talent and outstation pros with the likes of Sarandeep Singh, Vineet Indulkar and Bhavin Thakkar gelling well with the Sangram Singhs and Vikramjit Maliks. They are, however, likely to miss a consistent batsman in Paras Dogra, whose father passed away on Saturday night. HP is keen to utilise this platform to showcase its growing stature in domestic cricket. Except for Paras Dogra, who has rushed back home owing to his fathers demise, the team is in full strength. “We do not worry whom we are playing. We play to our potential and play according to our plan,†said coach Rajdeep Kalsi. “At this level it is all mental and our boys are ready for the battleâ€. The Vijay Hazare Trophy has eluded UP so far, and captain Mohammad Kaif is acutely aware of this blemish. “It will be fantastic to win it, but our first target is to reach the final,†he said. Hyderabad vs Baroda There are no clear favourites between Baroda and Hyderabad but both are here with an eye on the future. “About 70 per cent of our players are youngsters and many will be playing their second or fourth match. This team was built with the intention of grooming youngsters,†said Baroda coach Paras Mhambrey “Now that we have finished second in the West Zone, we will try to keep up the good work,†he added. West Zone runner-up Baroda will certainly miss the Pathan brothers, Yusuf and Irfan. Coach Paras Mhambrey said “the team is young and maximum players have the experience of just two to four matches.†Despite the absence of Pathans, Mhambrey felt the team was capable of winning the tournament. “The boys have the desire to do well and our aim is to win this tournament. The Hyderabad team looks intact with all of the players available for selection. The advantage of South Zone runner-up was that most of them are playing for the State on a regular basis in both forms of the game. The team will look forward to get the top order fire and fire well, especially the free-stroking Ravi Teja. PS: UP vs HP match is on NEO cricket
