Gambit Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Well, even the US, the paragon of capitalism and free markets, has reverted to protectionism to deal with it's flagging industries and unemployment issues. Also interesting is that Japan's economy contracted by 12% last year, given how export dependent their economy is! And you never know the real story about China given their state controlled media but according to some sources, millions of jobs have been lost which has led to mass scale rioting.

We can see that effect here in Richmond, BC its basically mini-china and half the businesses are gone already and these are small electronic traders What about India, how come we manage to stay afloat, is it our working model?

Services based economies such as those of India are usually more resistive to the tumultuous swinging to and fro of the global economy as a majority of those services are servicing the local economy. Thus, one would expect India to not be hit quite as hard by the economic downturn. However, our service sector exports a large majority of its products and thus that particular section would be vulnerable. I guess this is the ideal time for us to evolve from an exporter to a consumer economy as we have the large population, a large middle and upper class (that constitute the consumers) and a significant manufacturing base. Though this transition would not be possible till the economic reforms permeate deeper into the social hierarchy.

Last mnth i was in India , I stay in Jamshedpur (TataNagar) TATA motors was closed for 10 days on a streach in the mnth of December and they had planned to again close the production in the mnth of Jan from 14 th till the end, but luckly they got an order for 10000 trucks from Srilanka so it was postpond... But still the employees are uncertain about the future... its catching up in India as well..
