Gautam Gambhir in NEW ZEALAND - tour diary

Recommended Posts

Well done on half-century and giving good support to Viru in 4th ODI. I think he has got some good warmup in this 4th ODI. We should let GG open in 5th ODI also - he is going to open in Tests, and with ODI series wrapped up by India, the all important Test opener should get as much practice as possible on NZ pitches. Either rest SRT or let him play down the order. Or, Viru can rest too! Maybe GG and SRT open and rest Sehwag. He has had enough 6 hitting :D

Since the next match wont be of any consequence, SRT will not play even if he is fit. So most possibly Gambo will open.

Who should open in ODIs? VS-GG or VS-SRT? VS-GG seem 100% comfortable and having fun with each other, and GG settles down well in opening position.

In 24 innings, Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have added 1380 runs at an average of 60 and run-rate of 6.61 per over. Among Indian opening pairs, who have scored at least 750 runs, this pair has the highest average and strike rate. http://stats.cricinfo.com/statsguru/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;orderby=fow_run_rate;partnership_wicketmax1=1;partnership_wicketval1=partnership_wicket;qualmin1=750;qualval1=fow_runs;team=6;template=results;type=fow Overall figures Partners Span Inns NO Runs High Ave Balls RR 100 50 G Gambhir, V Sehwag 2003-2009 24 1 1380 201* 60.00 1252 6.61 4 6 V Sehwag, SR Tendulkar 2002-2009 69 0 2961 182 42.91 2986 5.94 10 13 SC Ganguly, V Sehwag 2001-2007 43 2 1625 196 39.63 1641+ 5.89* 5 6 SC Ganguly, SR Tendulkar 1996-2007 136 2 6609 258 49.32 6606+ 5.17* 21 23 M Prabhakar, SR Tendulkar 1994-1996 19 1 835 161 46.38 24+ 4.00* 2 4 A Jadeja, SR Tendulkar 1994-1996 22 0 1315 176 59.77 152+ 3.19* 5 7 SM Gavaskar, K Srikkanth 1981-1987 55 0 1680 136 30.54 - - 2 11 RJ Shastri, K Srikkanth 1983-1992 32 0 1135 188 35.46 - - 3 5

How many more times you want to raise that question? The best opener in the history of the game will open whenever he is playing. In his absence mere mortals will get an opportunity.

opening pair - SRT/VS do great too, but somehow VS/GG appear very comfortable opening with each other - nice chemistry!

If he continues poking outside off stump like this' date='he's in for a disastrous test series![/quote'] The drawback of both our openers and more so for Gambhir is they get very restless when tied down. On a pitch that is doing something, Gambhir could have taken some more time to get settled. But he keeps poking outside the offstump, and trying to jump down the pitch to smash the bowler. For the last 1 or 1.5 years GG was doing great. Before that he did the same mistakes, poking outside the offstump far too often and thats when he used to get 20s and 30s starts and throw it away. I hope we've seen the last of these poking, and for Tests he does not do this.
