India u-19 to tour Australia in April Mumbai: An India under-19 team will play a short series of three-day and one-day games against an Australian under-19 team in Australia in April. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s Junior National Selection Committee will pick the team on the basis of the performances in the Cooch Behar and other under-19 tournaments. Meanwhile, Procam International announced on Tuesday that an Indian schools cricket team (under-16) will be given the opportunity to play three international matches against the Sri Lankan schools team at the conclusion of the all India Boost Cup cricket tournament. “We have requested Prof. Ratnakar Shetty of the BCCI to assist us. The international matches will be held after the IPLTwenty20,†said P. N. Sankaran, Director (Operations), Procam International that’s taken the initiative to run the all-India tournament for schools for which Nike is the apparel partner. After the inaugural year of the competition in 2007-08, 20 players were coached by Mohinder Amarnath, Surinder Khanna and Sanjay Bharadwaj. “I am happy that Procam has taken the next step by deciding to invite an overseas schools team. Schools cricket is not organised in majority of the states that are members of the BCCI,†said Prof. Shetty. LINK Anyone knows who are the prominent U-19 players for India at the moment? As far as I know, Kulkarni, Jadeja--all have passed that age? Then? And Is Cooch Behar trophy is not covered anywhere? Who are the leading players in that? At the most I could find this news: Delhi boys on track Why is BCCI not planning an A tour in Australia? Many of our young players badly need the exposure and at such a crucial period when we should be preparing our younger players for international cricket, especially test cricket, BCCI seems to have shelved the A tours!

Chandrakant Pandit aims to build core group for U-19 World Cup Devendra Pandey Posted: Apr 01, 2009 at 1013 hrs IST Mumbai: India's under-19 team are set to leave for Australia on April 4 for a 16-day tour, which according to coach Chandrakant Pandit is an opportunity for the young cricketers to know each other's game and develop a rapport ahead of their World Cup title defence in Kuala Lumpur next year. "The boys are new and our main aim is to gel as soon as possible. There is still time for serious preparations for the under-19 World Cup," says former Indian wicketkeeper Pandit, talking to The Indian Express. Pandit, who has coached the Mumbai Ranji team as well as Maharashtra under-22 and India A sides, has stepped into Dav Whatmore's shoes who had led India to a memorable victory in the under-19 World Cup last year. Now, as it was then, the selectors have picked a squad that has quite a few all-rounders. "You can see that we have a lot of utility players and our bench strength is good. Right now we have just a couple of days together, so let?s see how it goes", says Pandit. Under-19 over IPL? Meanwhile, some of the cricketers reportedly had offers from the IPL teams, but they opted to be with the junior team. The gambit may pay off well in the future as a good showing at this level may not only fetch a better bargain the next time, but also brighten their chances of earning an India cap. Virat Kohli, who let the under-19 team to the trophy in Kuala Lumpur last year, was lapped up by Bangalore Royal Challengers and later played for India when they toured Sri Lanka. Says current under-19 skipper Ashok Maneria, "I know this is the most crucial phase of my life which can only help me build my career in the future. Many cricketers have gone on to play for India by performing at this level. I also am looking forward to it." The India under-19 cricketers are undergoing a camp at the MCA-BKC ground. They will play three one-dayers and two three-day games in Australia. _________________________________________________________ I hope they make a name here and earn a good reputation for their future here. But did we have any U-19 tournament with other countries after the Youth WC? I do not think so. And ignoring the junior cricket can be very harming to Indian cricket. All of us came to know about Rayudu, Ishant Sharma and Irfan Pathan much before they played the youth WC. In fact I'm not even sure if Ishant played one or not. But we knew about him since India U-19's tour to England and NZ. I don't think I can say the same about any of the current players.

U-19 team to Australia MUMBAI: Tackling Australian conditions is tough for any cricketer. The Indian under-19 squad learnt about adjusting to huge grounds and bouncy wickets during the preparatory phase at Mumbai Cricket Association’s indoor academy. The 16-member squad is scheduled to play three limited-overs matches and two three-day fixtures. Hobart’s Bellerive Oval and Perth’s famous WACA are the match venues. Coach Chandrakant Pandit put the boys through Australia-specific training. “This is a development phase, we have to be patient,” said the ex-India wicket-keeper. “We focused a lot on relay throws. The youngsters got familiar with retrieving the ball when fielding on large grounds.” Menaria to lead Rajasthan’s Ashok Menaria, a left-handed batsman, has been named captain and Madhya Pradesh’s Harpreet Singh is vice-captain. The India U-19 players, chosen for performances in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, appeared confident in interacting with the media during the camp. The squad: Ashok Menaria (captain), Harpreet Singh (vice-captain), Mukul Dagar, Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, Mandeep Singh, Manan Sharma, Sufian Sheikh, Avi Barot, Saurabh Netravalkar, Harshal Patel, Krishna Das, Jaidev Unadkad, Gagandeep Singh, Gaurav Jathar, Kundan Singh. Coach: Chandrakant Pandit. Tour itinerary: April 4: Arrival in Australia. April 7: 1st one-dayer, Bellerive Oval, Hobart; April 9: 2nd one-dayer, Bellerive Oval. Menaria stars in India colts' win over Aussies 7 Apr 2009, 1653 hrs IST, PTI MELBOURNE: Skipper Ashok Menaria played a captain's knock, scoring an unbeaten 63 runs to help the Indian under-19 team thrash their Australian counterparts by seven wickets in the opener of the five-match limited overs cricket tournament at the Bellerive Oval on Tuesday. Electing to bat, Australia were skittled out for a paltry 168 in 48 overs and India chased the required runs with five overs to spare. The Indian pacers restricted the hosts with some disciplined bowling while the spinners kept up the pressure on the Australian middle-order with some tight line and length. Manan Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 24 from his six overs of left-arm orthodox spin. In reply, the tourists got off to a steady start moving to 1-48 before Victorian speedster Jackson Coleman struck twice, snaring the wickets of Avi Barath (13) and Mukul Dagar (31), before finishing with figures of 2-21. But Menaria led the assault with an unbeaten 63 from 91 deliveries which also earned him the Player of the Match award. He got good support from Harpreet Singh (38 not out) as the pair guided the team home with an unbroken 79-run partnership. Coleman could have had another wicket had he not bowled Barath on a free-hit delivery during the 14th over. Earlier, South Australian Joel Garrett top scored for the home side with an well compiled 29, however with another three batters out in the 20s and another four out between 10 and 20, the hosts lost wickets at steady intervals to some tight bowling from the Indian spinners. Tom Beaton and Nic Maddinson (26 from 53) got the innings off to a solid start with a 41-run opening partnership, as Beaton (22 off 26) looked to accelerate early with some lusty blows down the ground. Although disappointed with the opening loss, Coleman was confident the home side would find the right ingredients ahead of the next match on Thursday. India under-19 team now leads the five-match series 1-0 ahead of the second 50-over-aside match at Bellerive on Thursday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Isn't this a fantastic news? So many youngsters, visiting Australia for the first time, win there and that too at Hobart! Here is the full scorecard: Australia Under-19s v India Under-19s -- 1st Youth ODI .
