Tendy in the 90s often walked in at 10/2 or something similar - people forget we had zero test-class openers back then - and from ball one, just was completely at ease, never looked like getting out until he did. Rock-solid, confident and dominant, even in defense. He is a pale shadow today of what he was. Goosey, is right about the contrast effect with the rest of the weak batsmen, but Tendy in his pomp was a clear level above anyone playing cricket, in the Indian team or anywhere else.

Tendulkar was the team. It was basically if he failed, India were badly stuffed. The thing is he scored a lot of runs in losing matches mainly because the rest of his team was pretty terrible minus Dravid and Azharuddin. Their bowlers were just as bad.
