goose Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Tendulkar in the 90s. Oh the ambiguity ! But seriously, we talk of Tendulkar of the 90s like he was on another plane versus the Tendulkar of today. Was he really that different? Or was it in fact us the fans that were different? Back then Tendulkar existed in a one-man team whose fans were made to walk an emotional tightrope every time he lay bat to ball. Every drive, every slash was a game of Russian roulette won time and again. He was the Messiah. His colleagues' ineptness amplified his aura. Get Tendulkar...get India was the established norm. Our love for his batting was matched only by the disappointment of seeing his dismissal. Nowadays of course, things are different. India has an embarrassment of riches. His batting is for the connoiseur and desperate fan alike. No longer the object of frenzied lust, just unrequited love. Was bored...

satishg Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 well we have had a plethora of debates about the undoubted genius of Sachin and this man after 20 years is still proving his critics wrong..well the truth is some ppl just dont want to appreciate him even if they know that there can be no other player like him..so no use talking to those kinda ppl..these are the last years of the great man..and once he hangs his boots, the whole world will truly know that there can be no one like him and as each day passes by i am dreading about that day..that day where i wud open my browser and come to know that he has announced his retirement..but until that day, the best thing to do is to enjoy watever is left in him..watever he is offering us..the centuries doesn matter anymore, not even the runs, as long as he holds the bat and stands in front of my TV screen ill watch him because when the day comes when this ceases to happen, i know that my life wont be the same again..

Yesterday though he batted a lot like his old self (although in a much restrained way) and you can't help feeling sorry for the bowlers. I just couldn't get rid of the thought that what would've happened you let 90s SRT go loose on the current crop of bowlers on current pitches. Many batsmen that many go gaga over made their fortunes by bullying bowlers with waning qualities, I just can't imagine what the old SRT would've done to them.

If i was given a choice to watch between Sehwag and Sachin,Iid go for sehwag right away
Shehezaada Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 I'm a HUGE Tendulkar fan but i've never seen him bat "live" in the 90s. The first I saw of Tendulkar was his double against ZIM in Nagpur. From the highlights there doesn't seem much letoff from what I can see. He seems MUCH smarter, and can is now our most reliable batsmen. Here's a list of crucial knocks he's played since WC 2007...it's like he's come back focussed to wipe off this "doesn't win matches, fails in pressure situations" myth. 1) 91 and 82 against England in England. Both came at times when it was important he stayed there and ENSURE that India take a huge lead 2) After India went down 3-1 in the ODI series, Tendulkar hit a quickfire 72, and then a blistering 94 off 81 to power the chase of 316. 3) 54* against Pakistan when Akhtar was on fire 4) 97 to seal the ODI series against Pakistan in Gwalior 5) 117 & 91 in the CB series finals to seal the win against Australia in Australia 6) Match saving 49 at Bangalore, 66 when Lee removed Dravid and Sehwag and India were 27/2, as well as another good 2nd innings contribution of 47 7) 103* in the 4th innings against England 8) 160 to ensure India gets a huge lead. Dont' think he can be called a choker anymore because he's been India's most reliable.

But on topic, yes he's more circumspect now, but then again consider this, he was more audacious before and yet he was the most consistent of all.

Tendulkar was very aggressive but Lara was a lot more extravagant, a lot less consistent.

And as you pointed out BCL was more audacious but much less consistent.
Ram Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Was he really that different? Of course he was. There was compactness and a secure feeling in his stroke play that is missing today. Then, he looked solid in both attack and defense, off front foot and back foot and was ruthless against pace and spin. Today, that fortress-like sensation in his batting is missing. So is the attacking intent that always seemed to form the under-current of his batting then. Of course, the watered down version of Sachin is still light years ahead of most of his peers, but for his fans, the period between 1994-1999 was the closest they could ever get to witnessing the real-life equivalent of cricketing God.

Most importantly era of great quicks.He was more confident,solid and immaculate reflexes as he was young . He is a class .Thats why still able to maintain his quality after so many years .Thats precisely the stuff of the legends. He was better in 90s compared to his own standard .No one else is comparable to him. He could have achieved way more in the 90s if not for the over expectation and immense pressure he had to face at that time.

He had an away average of 57 in that period. Lara(51) and S.Waugh(53) were the other two batsmen averaging over 50 in the 90s. Lara averaged 45 away from home and Waugh 58.

Dravid also averaged 50, though yes he did not play the entire decade and started only in '96. Gooch would have also averaged in the 50s - he was in superb form towards the end of his career.
