Arun Lal (and Charu) on Ishant Sharma

Recommended Posts

Lal offering his ‘expert’ comments on fast bowling is like a blind man describing the splendor of spring’s myriad colors. Everyone knows Lal knows nothing about cricket – even the broadcasters – He’s just there because he can speak 4 lines of English without stuttering and is not prone to making rude, offensive comments while on live T.V.

Ishant Sharma has lost incredible amount of Pace... In Australia, he was hitting high 140 but in NZealand he was bowling around 133-136 range... Hopefully our bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad is not making a Venkatesh Prasad out of Ishant Sharma ...i remember Harsha Bhogle once said about Ishant Sharma "If some person tries to cut down Ishant's pace, that person would be the most stupid person on earth"

Contrary to what a lot of people feel, I don't think NZ and England are very easy places to bowl in for someone inexperienced in those conditions. There is a specific length you have to hit day in and day out and the margins of error are very small. Ishant was bowling in NZ for the first time and the windy conditions really threw him off at Wellington. He will learn from the experience and come back a much more improved and versatile bowler. There is no need to put him under any sort of pressure. He should be allowed to fail and learn which is much easier in a winning team where the spearhead is bowling like a charm and the spinner has found a lot of his mojo.

Ishant was very disappointing on this tour. Make no mistake. Very surprising but that is a fact. What kind of a bloody excuse is -- cannot run into the wind ? If you have to do it, you have to do it. Producing an odd wicket taking ball or may be a 3 over wicket taking spell is not sufficient. You have to be consistent. And the 3rd seamer, we better start looking for an alternative. I have a feeling even R P Singh would have been better.

Mamu Mian, fast bowlers don't grow on trees as finished products. They need time to become complete products and for that they must be given the opportunity to fail and learn. Ishant would have never bowled in 40-50 kmph gusts before - how is it reasonable to expect him to perform in completely alien conditions at the very outset. He would have picked up the pieces, learned new tricks from the tour and will be a better bowler. It's a good 4-5 year period for a rookie fast bowler to learn all the tricks of the trade and become a complete product.

In knowing about pace bowlers performance, Max's choice was quite good during the earlier part of the series when they had invited Srinath. Manjrekar the idiot didn't let him speak freely, but even then he gave few terrific insights. Wonder why they had to choose Arunlal for tests! Srinath would have been terrific to tell us where Ishant faltered, what'd he have learnt with the new experience and what problems does a bowler face when he is bowling in these kind of conditions for the first time.

Srinath was away in West Indies overseeing the match as ICC referee.

No one is saying he should be dropped. Just pointing out that he was a bit dissapointing this tour. Agree 3rd seamer spot is seriously up for grabs. Just wish sree was fit and firing
Sree is a good cricketer but he is too emotional for a cricketer .. he has been more involved in controversies than concentrating on his bowling .. and whenever he gets battered he loses his line and length I would instead hope that some good fast bowling prospects emerge in this IPL

Sree averages 31 and stike rate of 57. He is a dammn good bowler and would make our attack stronger. Let him be emotional, if he is taking wickets like he has done in past then dont give a dammn
