Batsmen hitting sixes when in the 90s - Is it really unselfish?

Depends on the situation really, suppose you are batting out for a draw on the 5th day and Sehwag is the last recognised batsman left and he is on 94. I think going for a 6 to bring up his hundred is selfish in this situation. Having said that, I dont think Sehwag is a selfish cricketer. If you look at the Adelaide test in 2008, he curbed his natural aggressive stroke manner to ensure that India draw that match.

this whole selfishness thing is overrated. A batsmen batting 5 hours for his country in incredible heat is not selfish, even if it takes him more then usual amount of balls to get there in the 90s. if it happens repeatedly, then you might have a case. Maybe Kallis is an offender here. A lot of pakis say Tendulkar is selfish because of his knocks in Muiltan and a 100 against Australia in Mohali in 2003 or something...ridiculous. Look at his ball by ball and notice that his last 70 odd runs came at an 80 S/R!

As with most stuff from the arm chair critics, the so called selfishness is just another subjective notion.

Yeah, selfish is not the right word but it isnt un-selfish either. If everyone knows what you are gonna do(that is try to hit a six the next ball), its easier for the bowler to change his action at the last minute

Sehwag is in the form of his life and the manner in which he threw away his wicket in the first innings of both tests is, as Boss said, criminal. He scores at run a ball or close without taking any risks. He really needs to take his game to the next level, by eschewing these crazy brain freezes. If he can manage to do that over the next two years, he will be close to unstoppable.

He did well to leave short pitch stuff and waited for loose delivery, even then he was going at 100 SR. I think it was pre determine. He missed out on some valuable test runs here.

I think it is a bit selfish, what exactly is he trying to prove. He's made it into a trademark thing now, the bowler knows what he's going to do and they can bowl according to that. Its totally unnecessary to go after every milestone with a six, every time
