Rajiv Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 I have been sick guilty of this today, one of the techs in the office completed his job with absolutely no explanation of how he fixed the issue. I happen to notice it and sent it to the training department, and now he got fired today I told a colleague and he said "about time" which kinda hinted that this wasn't his first time His Notes eg., " Saw issue Fixed issue" I mean, what kind of work is that? He is an African American who was in the US Army and crossed over to Canada to avoid Iraq. He got married and has 2 kids I don't want to discuss it with anyone or gossip with the management about it I mean he must had some prior issues, else no one gets fired for writing bad notes in the system I am guessing its coz of me, but I am not 100% yet..meanwhile , I am feeling uncomfortable, didn't even watch the game today and feeling restless
Ram Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Rajeev, that guy got fired NOT because of you, but because he did not do his job well. Its not like you spread false rumors about him stealing things from the workplace that got him fired. If it werent you reporting this incident, it would have been someone else and he would have gotten fired anyway. Besides, I am also pretty sure there would have been several other instances where people would have complained about his work, which would have all contributed to his termination. So, the plain truth is, you have NOTHING to feel bad about. You did what you were supposed to do. He did NOT. So relax.
Rajiv Posted June 19, 2009 Author Posted June 19, 2009 ^^ I completely agree but the 3rd strike ( I think ) was from my complaint or shall I say doing my job You see if one tech doesn't put the notes right, then the whole chain breaks and someone has to start all over, it wasn't even my issue as I simply spotted it Its killing me that it was on my watch

punjabi_khota Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 When I was a kid, me and my lil sis once got maid/nanny at my home fired because we complained to our dad that she steals our food/stuff. :hahaha:
suraj Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Now if someone can get Dhoni fired as captain.. then we'll be talking
flamy Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Now if someone can get Dhoni fired as captain.. then we'll be talking I didnt see u complaining when we won the first WC :dontknow:
THX_1138 Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 I was fired from my first job... though not in so many words. It was my first job after high school, i managed the database for this company that was run by this first generation Indian couple. the company manufactured packaging boxes for jewelry and other items. I was not called back to work after the winter break, and i think it was in part because i was fooling around with the owner's daughter who was 14 then.

She did a reasonable job which was neither bad nor spectacular. I gave her a slightly above average rating, but then someone above me intervened in the process and asked me to reconsider my rating. I grappled over the issue for a couple of days, thought about how I had rated here peers and then marginally down graded her rating. Susbsequently the guy above me intervened again and wrote some pretty damaging things in her assessment. The girl has been asked to leave. This is a case where I was more responsible for someone getting fired than you. It was not easy to handle. But I came to the conclusion that it was the guy above me who queered the process substantially by writing things which were not entirely true. in effect he injected his thoughts about her into my assessment because she did not ask for an assessment from him. What do you think?

I understand the human empathy in these situations, but guess what, if he is a mature person, this probably would help him in the long run, although short run he may suffer, and if he is immature, it is about time he became mature. So dont fret.
The Outsider Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Not "fired" but "laid off" - the usual "budget cuts mean that you will have to let go of one person from your group, let us know the name by the end of the week". Terrible feeling.
CricketGirl Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 ^^^ my job involves having to fire people sometimes its not a nice experience but its business and no u shouldnt feel guilty!
DomainK Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Well, these are things that someone has to do at times. I remember I used to feel bad in saying 'no' to candidates after interviews. I remember one boy who waited for two months for the job while he turned down other jobs and then my boss asked me to call him and tell him that he was not selected. That was a tough one for me....because the boy was definitely more deserving than the others. I somehow felt guilty even though that was not my fault. Later on in my caree some got fired because of me....but I never felt for them as they were all really doing a lot of damage to the company's credibility and each was fired after enough warnings. In fact one is getting on my nerves these days and may get fired if the warnings are not enough.
Lurker Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 I dont think it was a simple case of not documenting stuff that would have gotten him fired Rajeev. It is too small an issue really. What makes you so sure?
dial_100 Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Right... They could have easily asked him to update his notes and be more descriptive. But real reason was already w/ them and they were waiting for a trigger. You were more a trigger. So your complain has mere decided the timing of his lay off. relax...
Ram Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 This reminds me another incident from the past, which had a similar case of perceived moral conflict. During our Engg., our campus placements had started in our 6th semester (3rd year) and ran into the 7th and 8th semesters(final year.) A few of us got placed in companies by the end of the 6th sem itself, while most of us did so, only in the final year. I was one of them who landed a job in my 3rd year. However, our college did give us the option of multiple placements – If you got a job in one company, you could try to get into other companies that came after that. That infuriated the students who had not gotten placed till then because they felt there was no need for students who had already landed jobs to try again and hence jeopardize their chances. I can understand how, at a personal level, someone who was my friend or I knew well could be a touch disappointed with me that I was competing with them for jobs when I already had one and they didn’t, but at a moral level, I think what I did was perfectly fine. My standard reply to those guys always was – ‘I am not physically preventing you from getting the job. If you did not clear the interview and get selected, it may just mean that you were probably not good enough on that day. So, instead of looking at external factors that may have derailed you from getting a job, you should probably look internally for reasons to improve and increase your chances.’

Lurker Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 You see if one tech doesn't put the notes right, then the whole chain breaks and someone has to start all over, it wasn't even my issue as I simply spotted it Thats not always true Rajeev. There could be different reason why someone does not take time to put notes down. I am guilty of doing so at times myself. My reason is solely dependent on the client/people I am working with. I am not gonna be handing out solutions on a platter, people have to earn it. Many a times I end up working with people who do not want to put enough time to understand the problem but want a 10 step to-do list in case this happens again. That puts me off and I simply do not provide that solution unless I am asked specifically to do so. On the other hand give me an organization/user that treats its Intellactual Property right and looks to debug the problem first and then find a solution, and I will hand over a manuscript of documentation built by me. Not saying this was the case with the chap though, you would probably have a better idea.
Rajiv Posted June 19, 2009 Author Posted June 19, 2009 I inquired about it today, it was his notes as well as lateness He was warned verbally and then official notice over a period of 4 years so... I am not feeling sop bad But in my place, notes are very important - its almost criminal not to put them down
