Sachin, Sourav set to make the cut Vijay Tagore MUMBAI: Blood will spill but the heads may not roll. The much-awaited selection committee meeting, to be held here on Friday will, may see some changes but the ?big two? will survive the axe. According to reliable sources, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag may be axed for next month?s tour of Bangladesh, but Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly are likely to be retained. Both Tendulkar and Ganguly have faced a lot of criticism for their lacklustre performance at the World Cup but the members of the selection committee are believed to be not inclined towards dropping them as yet. The selectors, meeting in the backdrop of a stormy working committee meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India which has asked them to pick youngsters for the Bangladesh tour, may opt for the middle route by chopping some and retaining some. At the moment the consensus among those who matter seems to be to retain Ganguly and Tendulkar and take some youngsters to Bangladesh, where India will play three ODIs and two Tests. Rahul Dravid has already been retained captain for the series. According to Board sources, no written instruction has been given to the selectors about the Working Committee decision but a few selectors have apparently been told orally by the BCCI officials. But it is likely that the selectors will formally be told about the working committee?s decision sometime before the meeting. Among the youngsters who are likely to come in are Rohit Sharma of Mumbai, Manoj Tewary and Ranadeb Bose of Bengal, and RP Singh of UP. Ramesh Powar, of course, is certain to come into the squad. Also in the reckoning are players like VRV Singh. The selectors seem to be unimpressed with the recent form of opener Robin Uthappa and that gives hope to a player like Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir, one may recall, lost the race to the young Karnataka bat in the World Cup squad. The case of Mohammad Kaif looks weak although he is not without supporters in the selection committee. It is not yet clear if Zaheer Khan, who has been impressive since his international comeback six months ago, will retain his Test place but veteran spinner Anil Kumble ? who recently announced retirement from the ODIs ? and Mumbai opener Wasim Jaffer are certain to come into the scheme of things for the five-day matches.

Re: Sachin, Sourav set to make the cut I will be happy if both are retained for both ODIs and test. If any one of them is dropped there will be all so much of political drama which i just dont want to see anymore. If both click then nothing like it but if they suck(more likely situation) hopefully when both have made enough fool of themselves and Indian team they will be gone for good.

You make a good point, Indian cricket cannot afford yet another debacle with people burning effigies of selectors and captain for dropping any of the senior players. Choose them both, let them both have a go. If they both failed to do anything, drop them forever. One problem here though is that they may score runs in Bangladesh but when they visit England or Australia later in the year they may suck again. I just hope for the good of Indian cricket they both come good. If Ganguly or Tendulkar are dropped you can expect people from Bengal and Bombay cheering for Bangladesh

Are we talking about tests or ODIs?? If it is ODIs then both Sachin and Saurav should be dropped. If it is tests then both should be retained---as simple as that!!

Re: Sachin, Sourav set to make the cut I wouldnt drop saurav against england. With the english pace battery he will retire hurt anyway. Its the batting which failed India in the WC not the bowling. If young blood is to be selcted it should be in the batting as per say. So both should be given a bit of rest.

Re: Sachin, Sourav set to make the cut With a line of politicians backing these two ....who come out with statements in support of them everytime even the suggestion is made....we can forget about these two leaving any time soon. This poll is redundant .

Re: Sachin, Sourav set to make the cut I am stupid or not Read the news paper. This will be last series for Sachin and Sourav. They are not going to play the first test match against Bangladesh. Whether David will finish Bangla or not He will finsh Sachin and Sourav. He is the worst captain in the history of Indian cricket.
