I wouldn't call them outright pervert/demons or whatever... esp if they grew up like that. But if one of 'relatively normal beings' changes to that lifestyle - it would have taken lot of courage/perversion/brain-death to be able to do that.

My friend was disgusted at a traditional Native American ceremony where 12 year old boys are kidnapped in the middle of the night by the men of the tribe and taken far away from their mothers and made to drink the blood of the men. It is an initiation ceremony for boys. Drinking of the blood is meant to make the boy understand that he can receive nourishment from his father too, and not just his mother.

Apparently it's very dramatic, the coming of the snake (men coming to take the boys) is fearful and the boys run to their mothers for protection who make a show of screaming at the snake and a big noise of trying to scare it away, but in the end the boys are then taken to the wails of the women of the tribe who beg the snake to leave the boys, and in a torch-lit cave full of the tribe's elder men the boys are offered the blood of their nearest relatives to drink straight from their arm or it is collected in a hollow wooden branch/shell and then poured into the boy's mouth. In some tribes the blood is left to dry till it becomes a dark jelly and then it is divided and shared equally amongst the boys. From that day onwards the boys are part of the menfolk and no longer look upon their mothers as their protectors but instead assume the role of the protector of the tribe.

Don't be a blind believer... but don't be a blind disbeliever either.
