vvvslaxman
I think it was unnecessary for him to walk backwards before even throw. You would expect the bowler to go near the stumps. It was very subtle and deliberate. You could do it very very unsuspectingly. Link to comment
ludhianvi
I dont think so, he was backing up as he may have suspected that the throw was coming in very fast. Sunny Gavaskar surely believed he did it on purpose though. Link to comment

vvvslaxman
There is a pattern . They stand right near the center of the pitch in the most likely running path of batsmen. You really think it is hard to do without any suspicion? Link to comment

There is no way the bowler/fielder will be able to stand right beside the stumps and collect a hard throw rifled in from mid-off with their bare hands. If you notice other such instances too, you'll see that it is a common pattern. Fielders dont go right behind the stumps in the strikers ends for hard throws that are mostly meant to be direct hits. Obviously, the story is different for moderate/gentle throws for those times when the batsmen is well short and fielder/bowler scrambles to go near the stumps. Then, they do try to catch the ball by standing right beside the stumps. Link to comment
