SJS50 Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Having said that, he is very good indeed. I am amazed at how much fans on various fora thought of venugopal Rao and clamoured for his inclusion in the Indian team and talked of injustice when he was not in the side (I am not talking of ICF here) but one doesn't see that kind of a fervour for Vijay (till this IPL circus came to town and he decided to hit some big shots). You have to watch any innings of just 40 or so by him to see his class. Again, I am talking in the context of a young and promising cricketer for finding a permanent spot in the Indian side in the near future - not comparing him with the established top batsmen of the Indian side like SRT, Rahul, etc. He is very impressive indeed. Its still early days but the promise and the potential is all there.
Sooda Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 So forums ka plural is fora. Never knew that. You do learn something new everyday Youre right about the way he plays though- technically correct and great timer of the ball, in that respect he does remind of RD and VVSL. The difference between him now and someone like Venu Rao back then is that the batting lineup is much more settled really in both/all three formats and there is no one whos place he can take. Particularly as he is a top order bat. So you will not get the same kind of clamour. The unfortunate thing for him also as far as ODIs are concerned (and this knock will hopefully see him be a strong contender for future squads) is that Kohli has cemented his place in India squads, and theres Kartik who's a fine bat and always in as back up keeper. Nice problem to have for selectors though Maybe Sehwag can bat at 5 and Vijay could open in tests-not in the immediate future but at some point. Sehwag relies hugely on his hand eye coordination which aint going to be the same as he enters his 30's. It might be best if he does not face the new/moving ball...mayhaps...
vvvslaxman Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 He doesn't look like any Indian player. I don't see Indian players playing with that erect stance. Even Yuvi bends to a certain degree. He looks like some NZ players and some Aussies who rarely bends. Bit of Simon Donnell, bit of Dean Jones.. and few more i remember. gakgupta Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 What a fantastic innings.....Some of them campared him to likes of vvs and some to Rahul Dravid......but i would like to compare him to Mark waugh and Inzamam......There is so much elegance about his shots and seems like he has lots of time even facing the likes of tait.....Even we saw talent in players like Rohit sharma, Manoj Tiwary etc etc.....but talent is just not enough....application is very very important.....and more than that hard work behind the scenes..... First time i saw him in challengers trophy....i was immensly immpressed with this chap.....But emerging trophy in australia was a big disspointment....but i was expecting that as he has loose technique against seeming ball and short ball......in two years this kid has improved a lot......and he has long way to go.... I think this guy has to be drafted into the one day side ASAP and most importantly give him chances whenever possible.....not spoil him like sudeep tyagi who warmed the bench so much that he forgot what pace bowling is....
thevortex Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 I never said he is Dravid or as good as him' date=' I said he [b']reminded me of him. When people first said Sehwag reminded them of Tendulkar they were not putting him in the same bracket as the little master. have a heart :) SJS - you seem to be missing the point. Murali Vijay is, in fact, nothing like Dravid. In his game, in his approach towards it or even his temperament. Temperament-wise and stroke-wise he is the spiritual successor for Laxman. He is not workmanlike in the manner of Rahul Dravid. Nor is he a technical fortress of any form. Comparing Murali Vijay with Dravid, in my mind, is not on. And I never said that you said he was as good as Dravid :). Just that Murali Vijay is a different type of player than Dravid. Hope that helps. Having said that, he is very good indeed. Its still early days but the promise and the potential is all there. Reminds me of something. I actually thought very highly of Venugopal Rao. I have seen him bat in a net session in Chennai and he was hair-raising that day! I think his career was destroyed by making him bat in limited overs matches ahead of his time. His is a game tailor made for the longer form of the game. Having said that he has only himself to blame for not really making his talent count in domestic cricket. He just does not seem to have the temperament to go with his talent. Badrinath - I know not many like him here - is the spiritual successor of Dravid. Not immensely naturally gifted but willing and game to utilize every last drop of god-given talent. He is also pretty strong technically and deserves a break at Test level. No, I am not saying Badri can ever be as good as Dravid. At 28, he does not have even the life left in him to emulate Dravid. But for a good 4 to 5 years he could provide solidity and be the bulwark of the team - in much the same way Rahul did it for us.
lonestarranger Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 Nor is he a technical fortress of any form. You might want to re-think this. I agree with all your other points though..
thevortex Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 You might want to re-think this. I agree with all your other points though.. No, really, I dont rate Murali Vijay's technique very high. He actually plays pretty loosely. If it comes to technique I would prefer Badrinath's over Vijay's particularly if it comes to defensive technique. Which is what I was talking about in Test matches. Perhaps I should make it clear that I was only really talking from the perspective of Test matches. I thought that much would have been apparent considering that Dravid found a place in the discussion :).
Sooda Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 I think Badri can be a Kaif like grafter - he seems to be pretty mentally sound, im not sure about his range of strokes and I certainly havent watched him enough to know about how good he is technically Im not sure if I agree though with Dravid 'not being naturally gifted' or 'workmanlike'...he is defensive yes, but that shouldnt overshadow what a brilliant timer of the ball he is when in flow, or the full range of strokes in his reportaire. He is a fine batsman to watch when he plays an attacking innings- as he has often in ODIs...supremely naturally gifted I think.
thevortex Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 The mature Dravid, like vintage wine, is a treat to take in. But his game was not one based on outrageous natural talent. Rather on patience, perspiration and sheer guts. I am only speaking this relatively though. Only in comparison with people like Lara and Sachin. Not to say that Dravid did not have batting talent or anything like that. Personally I think Badri is far better than a Kaif. But lets see how it goes.
Aaku Posted April 4, 2010 Posted April 4, 2010 He's fab ! He will so be a part of the WC winning Team India '11 ! :--D
King Tendulkar Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 Vijay makes life difficult for selectors! We now have 7 quality batters all competing for 6 places. A quality bat has to miss out. Fantastic dilema for indian cricket! Sehwag Gambhir Dravid Tendulkar Laxman Raina Vijay Who misses out for next test?:((
Desi Cartman Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 another problem is that MSD has asked for time off n wont be playing tests Vs kiwis ( as far as I can remember ).
saneindian Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 another problem is that MSD has asked for time off n wont be playing tests Vs kiwis ( as far as I can remember ). Is that correct? IIRC, the players had asked for the 5 ODI series to be cut to a 3 ODI series so that they can be in SA 10 days before the test series starts, rather than landing there 5 days before the 1st test starts.
