From what I have seen of him he has been very impressive to say the least. I first saw his batting in the challenger series last year, and was pretty good. After his debut against Australia, it just reinforced my opinion. But he was labelled as an "orthodox player"(even by commentators) and one who is technically sound but suited only for the longer version of the game. IMO, he is a very good prospect for the future, regardless of the 3 formats. Good to see him perform well, and one thing to be tested is his play in seaming tracks/overseas. A nice back up for Viru/Gambo Wat say guys? After all, Dada doesnt get it wrong:winky:

I loved his batting today. He got one opportunity and made his statement. He knows it as well as we do that in spite of his display today, he will be dropped as soon as Gambo is available, but he has made sure that wherever there is an opening, the selectors ca not looks past him. Brilliant innings today. It's not easy to bat with that super human Viru.

I know it won't happen, but I would get this guy in the side instead of Yuvraj, giving him plenty of Test experience before the big three retire. Yuvi can only dream of playing in the top order with the assurance Vijay has in his few chances. But as I say no chance of it happening.

Very calm, collected, methodical, solid technique, excellent temeperament. Above all, he has the mentality of a top-order test batsmen, which you rarely see these days. There seems to be no hurry whatsoever in his run collection.

UV couldn't play as much Ist class cricket as he should because he was selected for Indian team needlessly many times to sit on the bench only and he couldn't groom himself into a long format because of that and it does not mean he can not play test cricket. He is proving it since the Australian tour failure. he batted well against England when India chases 385, has played lankan spinners well in this series as well as in the last test series played in India in 2005 as well. I hope he will certainly all us wrong by his performances in future.

Some fantastic shots he hit. He impressed me the first time only when he batting against Australia last year. As Ravi Shastri said, it was quite important how he played spin, because he might not get enough chane to open since gambhir-sehwag are there, but with Indian middle order all around 35, there is a chance he would make it to middle order when one of the greats decide to call it a day.

When you see new batsmen your first reaction is to look for weaknesses. This guy doesn't have much weakness. He gets into good positions regardless of the length , line, movement. On a true pitch he can be trusted. He is much better than Jaffer in feet movement.

guys....Vijay dint get a chance to play hostile short pitched stuff till date in his career. His hooking, pulling , defending skills need further test. Also he will not get a chance for the next two years until someone retires or UV enters a real bad patch. By that time he may be gone and new players may arrive in the domestic circuit. I think he played well yesterday. Its a pity that BCCI killing test cricket. So no more test matches for us.

Best clue about batsmen's ability to play short pitch stuff is evasive technique. Vijay's technique is similar to Dravid's. Dropping of wrists and swaying the head away. He did perfectly every time. There are some players who rise with the bounce and gets into awkward positions. He is not one of them.
