I have a vague memory when I was about 3-4 years I suppose and a cousin (around 20 years maybe then) came to our house.. at that time there used to be the music casettes and my dad had got an audio tape of dialogues of Amitabh movie "Shakti" (dad was a big Ambitabh and Dilip Kumar fan) in his collection too which he used to listen often.. my cousin took the audio cassette of Shakti and using our tape recorder, my cousin sang this "Tu maike mat jaiyyo, mat jaiyyo meri jaan" maybe a hundred times with some of his funny and BS dialogues in between and destroyed the whole cassette .. I was just a kid and my sister was not too big too and we found it funny .. my cousin returned back to his native town the same day in the afternoon and my dad came back at the evening from his office and was pissed off to see his dialogues of Shakti rubbed off with my cousin's crap singing of the song and the dialogues .. dad scolded me for giving him the tape recorder the the Shakti audio cassette .. still laugh over the incident sometimes :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: I still remember my cousin singing the song with his nose in Himesh style and I had that cassette till the time the cassette did not become bad :cantstop: Anyways just found the song on youtube efROJy2vsx4

It is not only about Sonia or offending anyone but it is that times have changed a lot. Obviously I was neither born nor lived at those times but from what I know of history, we were still not a completely stable nation then. But we are a stable and responsible nation today with many world countries looking upto us for world decisions. At that time, we needed to fight the small wars etc. post-independence to unify India and stabilize the country. But today our concerns have changed to economic growth and evolution as economic superpower in the next few decades. So, our priorities have changed a lot and all the world countries have a lot of expectations from our nation. If you think logically, it was not ethical to occupy Goa but that was the need of the hour. Before that also we got many princely states to join India at that time. But that was all the need of the hour to unify the country and build a strong nation. Once we were a strong and stable nation we concentrated on growth and today we are a significant player in world affairs. And in future decades we are expected to become a superpower. So, situations have changed and things we did at that time cannot be done now. In those post-independence times, we had to take a significant number of steps based on the need of the hour. I can give you a small example of the same. The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was the brainchild of Nehru and India was also one of the 5 founding nations. Nehru himself gave the basic principles of the non-aligned movement which was called Panchsheel. The Panschsheel principles were: 1. Mutual respect for each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty 2. Mutual non-aggression 3. Mutual non-interference in domestic affairs 4. Equality and mutual benefit 5. Peaceful co-existence But if you check it we had made several diversions from this Panchsheel too at that time. We somewhat sided with Russia which was against the basic principle of NAM which was established not to side with any of the two superpowers at that time (US and USSR). Secondly we made small occupations like Goa etc. which was against Principle 1 of Panchsheel. So, even though Nehru and we as a nation started this Non-Aligned Movement but we also had to contradict it at times because the situation was as such. So, it was the times when we needed to take those decisions. But today we are a stable nation and a developing country expected to be a world leader soon. At this point the whole world is focusing on us and we need to take every step carefully. So, it would not have been possible today. You are right about it but at the same time the times have also changed and you need to keep that in mind too.

So there was no support for the Portugese in Goa and they surrendered.

Worst case scenario would have been the casualties. Credit to our leadership & armed forces for the decisive steps unlike the Kashmir conundrum. The only recent scenario of a country recapturing its assets far away from its mainland i could think of has been the Royal Navy's victory in the Falkland's war, that navy had some character :hatsoff:

Guest Gunner Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 doesn't make sense :hmmmm2: As I know the history of this episode, the Portuguese naval ship set sail with military equipment to support their forces in Goa. Along the way they were not allowed to berth in any of the ports and were prevented passage through the Suez with military equipment. What I have read suggested that the British were the protagonists which prevented the passage of the military equipment, perhaps I am wrong.
