gaurav92
We have seen a dropping graphing in the standards of fielding by India in the last 18 months or so.I reckon it was just after the Aussie tour that we played so well. Some reasons that i feel are responsible to the dropping graph of India fielding is :- 1) Too much money injected in players via IPL.This makes them tired and eventually a 20 year old, fields like a 35 year old man. 2) Besides this, even the lack of practice, due to increasing no. of endorsements for every player, advertisement and brand names come before the net session. 3) Strong batting line up, that gives us cushion of 30 runs at least, leads to complacency in the field, as we think that our batsman can do the job and nchase down any total. 4) Too many field changes, I have also noticed that MS keeps fielders busy by moving them to various positions too often.Instead, keep the best guy, in much needed position. 5) Wrong field placements.MS keeps bowlers at Fine Leg and Third man, where in many balls go in the first 10-12 overs. The new ball bowlers has to run some more yards after every over, and come and bowl again.A wiser decision would be to keep the opening bowlers at Mid on or Mid off. Another analysis that i have done is the different in outfields : 1) The sub-continental field is far more dry than in Aus/Eng.The outfield is very fast in sub continent as it has dead grass or dried grass, whereas in Aus there are live green grass. 2) The outfield is very hard from under the grass in sub continent, making it hard for fielders in the ring (like point, covers etc.) to dive, whereas in Aus/Eng the ground is not as hard as this, and the fielders feel it less risky to dive for fielding and catching. Any more points are welcome. What do u say? Link to comment

Ram
The fact of the matter is, most of our guys are simply not in shape that is required of international class athletes and it shows on the field. Look at some the decent fielders in our team - Guys like Raina, Kohli or Jadeja.. All of them are lean, young and fit. Even a senior like Sachin Tendulkar, despite playing international cricket for so long, has kept himself in excellent physical shape. Sadly, the same cannot be said of some of our other cricketers. Guys like Ojha, Yuvraj, Zak seem to be in terrible shape and have embarrassing double chins and flab in their abdomen. When that happens, mobility is restricted. When mobility is restricted, obviously ground fielding and catching suffers as a result. Link to comment

I have always said that until India start playing real attention to athleticism and body conditioning at a young age then they will always be like oil tankers in the field. It has to be drummed in that looking after your body and nutrition are very important. The state of yuvraj singh and zaheer is shameful - they are paid to be full time international sportsman not part time slobs. What incentive have younger players got to maintain their fitness discipline if they see fatties playing for the national team. Until this situation is reversed India will always be an embarrassment in the field. Link to comment

saneindian
Yuvraj becoming a bad fielder is hurting us the most. Earlier he used to produce moments of brilliance inspiring the others, sadly that kind of an effort has been lacking with even our best fielders currently the likes of Raina, Kohli and jadeja, have been dropping dollies. champ
Fine them 1 lahk rupees for every drop without pressure they are dropping catches .. and if weight of 1lakh puts more pressure .. :phehehe: but a good suggestion for bcci to try :two_thumbs_up: Link to comment
zubinpepsi
its has gone to the stage where bowlers and fielders aint even surprised by the drops.... they seem to have accepted this... Link to comment

When you know you're out of shape, you just dont trust your body as much as when you're in shape, as far as athletic exercises like playing a cricket game is concerned. Not just that, when you're not in shape, it affects your overall stamina. So, as the game goes on and on, your body tires faster because if inadequate stamina and the fielding levels drop alarmingly, especially during the end of the innnings. Lets get real, we can NEVER be as good as teams like Australia, South Africa on the field. We're simply not built for it, the same their batsmen are not designed to be wristy players. But what we can do is to make sure our players are top class condition and give them the best training to make sure their general motoring skills improve. But everything has to start from the fitness aspect. Trying to teach unfit, out of shape cricketers to be good fielders is like trying to teach a dog to speak spanish. It just wont happen. Zelig
We are not born athletes. Period. Someone like JP Duminy will beat Nehra in an 100m dash even if Ash is given a head start of 20m. Link to comment
vvvslaxman
Very good points mate. Strong batting line up has definitely allowed both bowlers and fielders to be complacent. Dhoni is in charge. Upto him to stop the rut. Never seen an Indian fielding side as worse as this. Link to comment
asterix
Having too many Priimma Donnas in the team also doesn't help..Players like Bhajji, Nehra, Zak and even UV now, can't be asked or bothered.. Bhajji's fielding has become atrocious, off late..or shall I say since he has ensured his place by gifting Hummer to Dhoni & having business relationship with Dhoni.. He never fields cleanly and always tries to save himself first, saving runs, catching, effecting run outs or helping teams chances be damned!! Just watch his fielding in general and while he bowls. He never goes back to get the throw behind the wicket, in fact he deflects throws by his hands to give extra runs!! Then he gives angry looks at the fielder as is to warn him to not throw at his end as he can't be bothered and he thinks that he is above the team , anyway.. Dhoni's inert captaincy and total non-chalance towards field placings also doesn't helps.. Link to comment

THX_1138
this whole business that all the endorsements and advertisements are taking away from a player's match preparation time is nothing but an urband legend, spewing from the faucet of the bottomless tub, and right at the spigot is the hand of former cricketers who are marginally grumpy, and marginally jealous for the new found wealth of their younger counterparts. read that as bishen singh bedi. if there are any reasons for dropping standards in fielding, its lack of both fitness and emphasis on this particular talent. harbhajan, the ***** that he can be on occasion, did not seem the least bit flustered, even a bit flushed after spilling the dollies that came his way. furthermore, we do not seem to know how to hit the motherloving stumps! practice that shyte boys, thats the only way. and yeah, running a few laps and doing a few dips would only serve to improve fitness and outfielding abilities. for some reason, lethargy, or nonchalance possibly, no one seems to practice these ruddy basics!
