Fontaine Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I'm trying hard to come up with a reason for Sreesanth to get the new ball let alone be picked for the 2nd test? Zaheer has routinely gotten great seam movement, Sharma is creating awkward angles, squaring up the batsmen with his bounce. Meanwhile Sreesanth has gotten almost no real seam movement or even the basics like bowling to a consistent line and length. One or two decent deliveries per three/fours overs don't really count and he still keeps on bowling awful, loose and wide boundary balls every over. He was pretty much outbowled by the bangla seamers at times. Why not pick Tyagi for the 2nd test?
Cricketics Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Fontain, the reason is simple. The bowlers who are sitting outside the team are worse then Sresanth. Sreesanth has hardly played any cricket to be judged and throw out this quickly by the selectors. Apart from RP Singh no seamer has really done vastly well to be considered for the Indian team.
vvvslaxman Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Sreesanth is a good bowler. Struggles a bit against left handers. But he is a genuine outswing bowler. Definitely these 3 are the best we have for Tests after RP's indifferent form. Tomorrow he will definitely have a role to play.
Fontaine Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 Then why was Tyagi picked in the squad? Sreesanth has great talent, no doubt. But he produces once every 5/6 tests. For a new ball bowler, that's awful. I would rather see Tyagi who's there on merit rather than waiting for Sreesanth to show consistency for even one spell.

satishg Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 dude he has just played 2 tests since he got the MOM against SL, he did bowl well against Lanka in the last test as well and judging his performance against Bangladesh in this match u want him out. If that is the case then Ishant shd have never come back to the team at all in the first place. Sree is an excellent talent and we should not waste him.

Sooda Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 He did bowl well versus the Lankans in the tests admittedly theve been some poor ODIs in between, but he never was a good one day bowler. I am not watching so dont know how badly he is bolwing but unfair to shunt after what is really just one poor test in this one.

Probably in the next match he might mop floor with Bong boys. It was not like he was totally useless. He took two important wickets. We cannot drop players just for the heck. Just give some time.
Fontaine Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 No you are under-estimating his ability. On some surfaces some guys would do better than others. Probably in the next match he might mop floor with Bong boys. It was not like he was totally useless. He took two important wickets. We cannot drop players just for the heck. Just give some time. Believe me, I'm not under-estimating his ability. I really admire his talent. Especially the way he can seam the ball effectively and shape it away from the offstump. It's because he's got that kind of talent that I think it's important he should be dropped if he doesn't produce in this series. It would be different if he was like a Munaf Patel who's a limited bowler right now. No one can expect Patel to get 4/5 wickets per innings because he's not capable of that. Sreesanth is capable. But the fact that he's so inconsistent, under performs that shows me that even with his years of experience, at an age of 26 when he should be entering his prime, he's simply the same inconsistent, way ward bowler he's always been, with one or two good performances every 5/6 test matches. In this match there was very little to no swing. But Zaheer used his experience and seam movement to setup batsmen. Sharma used his bounce and angles to make it difficult for batsmen. Sreesanth did pretty much nothing apart from bowl one or two good deliveries every 2/3 overs. That's simply not good enough. I would much rather someone like Tyagi learn and grow his experience on this tour and let Sreesanth sort out his inconsistency issues. Not to mention his no ball habit. He went around the wicket to bowl and immediately lost his rhythym, his run up and bowled four no balls in one over. The same thing happened in his last tour to England where he lost his run up, bowled a beamer and lost all rhythym. Do it once or twice, then maybe it was just a mistake. Keep on doing it and it's habit.

But how many more test matches and average to poor performances will we have to wait before he bowls up to his talent again.

Not to mention his no ball habit. Ishant not long ago was a noball specialist. You cannot drop a genuine outswing bowler from your Test side just because he had a poor test. The test is not even over. You are jumping the gun way too early. He is a genuine trier. Only problem is he tries to pick up wicket every ball rather than trying to set the batsman up. Let us not pretend that we are going to find a Malcom marshall, Wasim Akram who would deliver every innings. Even Zak doesn't deliver every innings. He and Ishant didn't do that well in Srilanka. Nobody is consistent in this Indian side.

However, Zaheer is far more consistent in pitching the ball in the right areas and actually sets up batsmen. You're right about Sreesanth that he tries to bowl a wicket ball too much and that's just dumb. And my expectations are a lot lower than you think. I would happy if Sreesanth just managed to bowl consistently in the right areas for two/three test matches in a row (never mind wickets), but has he ever done that? What cannot be denied is that he's one of the most inconsistent bowlers. And there's no excuse for that given how much experience he has.
vvvslaxman Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Cool it bro. It is only his 3rd test since his return. He will get around. Now that we got a bowling coach. Just be patient. If he totally sucks ball for the next 2 or 3 tests we shall play someone else. He has won a test match for us on a dead wicket. Imagine how heart breaking to get dropped two tests after that.
f.b.m Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Is there a reason why Sreesanth should be picked again? Yes, because this was just one match and no one cares about Bangladesh. Generally though, he isnt half as good to left handers as he is to the right handers and chances are its a slight technical issue more than anything. And no balls should hardly be an issue in test matches unless its a spinner. And hate to say it but Tyagi just doesn't look like a test match bowler. And we really don't have too many better seamers. Its just upto the captain now to manage the bowlers such that Zaheer bowls more to lefties and Sree to the right handers, etc. I would be a lot more worried about Mishra's crappy display so far than anything else.

Ok, thanks for that. But why do you say Tyagi doesn't look like a test match bowler? I think he's got good natural abilities like good height and long arms with the ability to bowl in the right corridor consistently? It still remains to be seen if he can move the ball around though.

graphic23 Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 I think thats a bit of an overreaction, Fontaine. Sure he's not looked his best in this game, but I think being dropped is not something he deserves, especially given that Zaheer and Ishant are not in the best of forms either. This attack is a potent one. Mishra has not played in a long time, and Ishant has been terribly out of form for a while now. Zaheer's getting better by the day, and Sreesanth still has the energy to run in and bowl pretty quickly through the day, which is a great thing to have (I think the lowest speed he's reached is about 132 kmph, and given how Ishant's highest is around 135-136 this series, thats pretty good).
Texan Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 All Indian pace bowlers (with the exception of Zaheer) should be routinely and regularly dropped after 3 - 5 test matches. Only then do they realize that they have to perform in each and every game and not take their place for granted!! Look at Sreesanth - when he made a comeback, he got a 5-fer immediately but has gone wayward since then. Even Ishant Sharma - once he found that his place in the team was secure, dropped his pace significantly. Ditto Munaf - the first couple of games that he is played, he bowls well and then completely loses it. So, the only logical conclusion is to play a pace bowler for 3 - 5 tests at a time, drop him, pick another and keep repeating this.
