Indians mull over team composition RAHUL BANERJI Dhaka Jan. 22: With the first Test tucked away comfortably under the belt, the Indians, on Friday sat back and reassessed how the opener at Chittagong went, and what now needs to be done to close out the series in the second and final Test that begins in two days time at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium here. Victory generally tends to cover up for lapses along the way, but by and large India did little wrong other than the opening day’s batting collapse at the ZAC Stadium. Two splendid bowling efforts thereafter brought them back strongly after Sachin Tendulkar (105) and Gautam Gambhir (116) had provided the impetus in the two innings. While there appears to be little cause for worry, it must be remembered that two members of the winning team at Chittagong have been sidelined in addition to regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. Middle order batsman Venkatasai Laxman needed 10 stitches in his left hand after dropping a catch and paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth pulled up lame — both in the Bangladesh second innings. Overall, this will probably not affect India unduly as the demands at Dhaka are bound to be different from those at Chittagong, but indications are that Laxman at least is still in the scheme of things. He was earlier scheduled to fly out some time on Friday, but has now been asked to stay on for another day. According to administrative manager Arshad Ayub, the team would wait on the Hyderabad stylist a day longer than scheduled. “We will wait till tomorrow before we decide what to do,” Ayub was quoted as telling a cricket website on Friday. Ayub had said on Thursday at Chittagong that Sreesanth would need an MRI scan. As of now that situation has not changed, but the quick may not come into the picture at all if India opt for two spinners. Given the way Ishant Sharma (2/47 and 3/48) bowled in the first Test, with good pace and control, he is likely to be the first pick alongside Zaheer Khan. Said stand-in skipper Virender Sehwag later, “Ishant bowled really well here. It’s good for him and good for Indian cricket.” And while Amit Mishra (3/65 and 4/92) too had a good outing at Chittagong, the continued coyness of the team management over Harbhajan’s fitness continues to keep alive the possibility that the overall shape of the attack may not change very much for the second and final Test here. There are therefore grey areas for Dhoni — who is improving by the day from his back spasms — and coach Gary Kirsten. India have a cover in the event Laxman is forced out of the second Test in the form of Murali Vijay, while left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha has also looked sharp at nets, so replacements are not a problem. What is an issue is how much the management wants to fiddle with the XI that won in Chittagong. Dhoni is almost certain to return — though in what role — is as yet in doubt. If he plays purely as a batsman, Dinesh Karthik gets to stay on. Ojha is on stand-by in case Harbhajan does not make the cut, as are Vijay or Karthik for Laxman and at least for now, the visitors look to have their bases covered.

There is no good reason why Bangladesh should not take 20 wickets- Dhoni

Mirpur (Bangladesh): After Virender Sehwag's deriding statement against the host side, regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday switched to damage control mode saying they will not take Bangladesh lightly in the second Test, beginning on Sunday. Sehwag, who led the team in the first Test in absence of Dhoni, was blunt while saying that the Bangladesh was an "ordinary" side which cannot bowl India twice. Asked whether Bangladesh can beat India in second Test, Dhoni said, "That is why they are playing. You should not take any side lightly in international cricket. At the end of the day it was the 10 balls that matters. There is no good reason why they (Bangladesh) should not take 20 wickets." "If any side does not think that they can win, what is the point of playing. We don't think of losing and we always want to win. But we have lost matches against some good sides. So, anything can happen in cricket," he said at the pre-match press conference. Dhoni however, said his side dominated the first Test match till the end after their batting collapse in their first innings. "After the fourth day, frankly speaking everybody knew Bangladesh cannot win. Either we would win or the match could be a draw. Their bowlers did reasonably well in the first Test but they were supposed to that as an international side," he said. Dhoni also said that Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were gradually growing into world's best opening pair. "There can be arguments on this but I feel that Viru (Sehwag) and Gauti (Gambhir) are shaping up as the best opening pair in the world. They have given strong starts many a times. That is very important in Test matches in sub-continental pitches," he said.
