The injury had ruled Dravid out of the two-Test series against South Africa. India's champion No. 3 batsman has spent three weeks recuperating after a minor repair to his jaw at the Manipal Hospital, but has gradually prepared himself for the Hazare Trophy, facing Karnataka bowlers in net sessions at Bangalore. Dravid was absent from the team's three-hour training and practice routines here on Monday. Coach Sanath Kumar said Dravid, named captain of the Karnataka team, was expected to arrive late on Monday evening. Karnataka is here by virtue of finishing second to Tamil Nadu in the South Zone Subbiah Pillai Trophy tournament. On the evidence of unfolding events in the pre-quarterfinal between Saurashtra and Uttar Pradesh at the Palace ground, Karnataka's seam attack — mainly Abhimayu Mithun and R. Vinay Kumar — should be keen to bowl on a fresh wicket on Tuesday. It was at the same venue the two had shared 12 scalps and played the lead role in Karnataka's thumping win against Baroda in the Ranji Trophy Super League in the first week of December last. The BCCI's all-India knockout tournament offers an opportunity for the southern State that lost the Ranji Trophy final to Mumbai at Mysore to regroup and have a tilt at the title. With plenty of in-form batsmen and competent set of bowlers, Karnataka should get the better of Haryana. The Hazare Trophy and the immediately following inter-Zonal limited-overs tournament for the Deodhar Trophy — to be played here from March 6 to 9 — presents a platform for a handful of players to press their claims for a spot in the squad for the Asia Cup to be held in June. In good form Haryana's selectors have chopped and changed the team in the North Zone league but Joginder Sharma's side topped the league and eliminated Delhi from the knockout. Nineteen players figured in the zonal league and, for the knockout, the selectors have included Mukul Dagar, Jayant Yadav and B. Lingwal. Even as Sagar Jogiyani (102 not out) and Sitanshu Kotak (69 not out) led Saurashtra to a facile seven-wicket win against a depleted Uttar Pradesh in the pre-quarterfinals here, the Haryana team arrived for a short practice session. The 37-year-old skipper struck a 65-ball 77 as Karnataka made the short work of Haryana’s 224 all out in 48.1 overs an stormed into the semifinal with a cconvincing six-wicket win that came with a whopping 73 balls to go. Chasing a modest 224, Dravid took guard after the dismissals of Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey. The Karnataka skipper's arrival onto the scene of action in as early as the eight over owed itself to the termination of a breezy knock from Pandey that exuded destructive intent in the form of two towering sixes and as many fours. Left-arm spinner Sanjay Badhwar, who had castled Uthappa, was a trifle fortunate that Pandey's attempt to steer the ball on the off side went straight into the hands of a crouched Rana at short backward-point. Severe response Quite excited at a chance to bowl at Dravid, Budhwar finished his almost 15m run up and hit the deck hard for an intended short ball. Perhaps Dravid too anticipated a short ball or a bouncer, but his response to the first ball he received was severe. The chase began on a bad note with Uthappa falling for duck, but Manish Pandey’s brisk cameo (30 off 19 balls) gave Karnataka innings the push. Satish and Dravid then joined hands to heap misery on Haryana as the duo added 119 runs in a matter of just 16 overs. He injured himself playing a ridiculous game of touch football just before the biggest day of his career, when he was about to play a test match. That is just too casual. He has the talent though. And I think he should open the batting. There is something about his batting that speaks of a good player in the making.
