And when Bhutto openly proclaimed that he will eat grass if it was reqd to have a nuk weapon our asses should have been on their case covertly or overtly .... Pakistan's civilian nuclear programme started with assistance from the US. And given our leanings to USSR during the cold war, we cannot overrule the theory that the US might have covertly assisted Pak in it's quest for nukes in the 70s to maintain 'balance of power' in South East Asia. It all comes down to how meek we are as a nation ..... people smell that stuff from miles. You do what it takes to keep you floating .. no one has the balls to mangle with a humoungous country like India ... only if our bloody country realized that. I don't disagree with you there. We have been soft on terror because most of the governments we've had, given the capricious electorate, have focussed on the smaller picture and made an effort not to offend any minorities' sensibilities.(

Israel is the ONLY DEMOCRACY in the middle east and Arab citizens of Israel enjoy almost all of the same rights as the native Jews. Make the distinction between the The Arab citizens of Israel, who comprise 20 % of the population and Arab citizens of the terrorities, which are not part of Israel but are under Israeli occupation. Well Iraq is a democracy too now, if you can call it that. Israel has 20% Arabs, doesn't mean Israel cares about them. They still consider themselves a Jewish state, there is widespread discrimination against the Arabs and ofc it would naturally be a hostile place to live in given that the country is openly jewish. Any country that is not officially Secular can never be an equal place to live in for the minority. BTW, I am not comparing Israel's behavior to that of it's neighbors, talking about it in the context of something India should follow or not.

Arab citizens get a say in internal politics, with 12 out of 120 seats in the Israeli parliament held by Arab political parties. They also enjoy freedom of speech / freedom of press and a greater quality of life, Israeli Arabs that is, than those in the surrounding Arab countries. No joke. Even in the settlements of the West Bank, only a minority belong to the radical right, majority are there only for economic reasons.

Like I said, I am looking at them in the context of a model to follow for us/India. Arabs do not enjoy equal rights. They are second class citizens. They constantly have to keep filing lawsuits and go to the Supreme court to get judgments in their favor when they face discrimination. Like many posters have pointed out here if we want to be powerful in our region we have to project it ourselves.
