Trichromatic Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 The finger print scanners procured aren't good enough. By any chance you didn't think this as a technology issue did you? I did, but is it that they were not aware of this or they deliberately went ahead with such scanners?

Crookbond Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Questions for Mr. Nilekani http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/questions-for-mr-nilekani/article4382953.ece Should Aadhar be mandatory to PDS like MNREGA, Pension etc.? UIDAI's biometric standard committee has raised questions over large scale biometric efficiency and usefulness. Will the database be secure considering contractors like L-1 Identity Solutions, Accenture are involved with both UIDAI and US governments?
Crookbond Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Maharashtra loses data of 3 lakh UID cards http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/Maharashtra-loses-data-of-3-lakh-UID-cards/articleshow/19687125.cms Containing PAN and biometric information, the data was being uploaded by the state information technology department from Mumbai to the central Bangalore server of the Unique Identification Number Authority of India when it got "lost". "The information is encrypted when uploaded. While the transmission was in progress, the hard disk with the data crashed. When the data was downloaded in Bangalore, it could not be decrypted," said an official from the state IT department, which is overseeing the enrolment of citizens for Unique Identification number (UID) or Aadhaar card. The data mostly belonged to applicants from Mumbai.

Mariyam Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 You have no choice unless you don't want subsidy for the domestic LPG. Most Hsg societies, at least in Mumbai, have gas pipelines. Long gone are the days of waiting for Bharat Gas LPG cylinders and/or buying them in black.

Aadhar was always a proof for identity, a proof for residency and never a proof of citizenship. The coverage is 1/3rd as of now, the sceptics will embrace it in a couple of yrs when it becomes 2/3rd or 3/4th. Makes sense its not compulsory for getting salaries as of now. But remember, salary was first given as cash, then as account payee cheque and now as ECS transfer, may be in future aadhar no. and salary account no. will be linked

As long as that continues, Aadhar shouldn't be mandatory/compulsory.

As long as that continues' date=' Aadhar shouldn't be mandatory/compulsory.[/quote'] what kind of issues do you have? 1. Like some people being able to enter any Aadhar no. and get info on that aadhar no.(address, name, age, photo) or 2. people in security agencies being able to query the database by name, photo, biometrics etc, or 3. the concern of database getting hacked? I guess you know that Aadhar DB only holds {address, name, age, photo, biometric data} for most individuals. If say a health insurance company uses Aadhar, they will use it for identity verification purpose only. And they will have their own DB which will link your Aadhar no. to your medical/health record.

We have enough threats from our own governments lest external entities. I'm not even going to start on Chinese hackers acquiring access to the Aadhar DB (which FFS is not decentralized and should be as a 101 lesson :wall:). The concerns of an Orwellian government authority using it for nefarious purposes and the use of biometric data for Stasi tactics is enough concern for me. Btw, if you have not try reading the LSE report on using unique id verification using biometrics.

These concerns would be there in any country using biometric UIDs. UIDAI started the project knowing fully at the start that these concerns would be there. By decentralization, you mean like 1 database server for storing {name, DoB, photo,Aadhar numbers}, another for {address,Aadhar numbers} and another for {biometric data,Aadhar numbers} ?

One thing to know about concerns - another thing to implement it. UIDAI didn't do jack sh!t to alleviate these concerns. On a scale of 1-10 where 10 being the worst, UIDAI would score 50. Even basic industry level safe guards aren't kept in place. Just look in this thread and check the mishaps with data taken place - fake IDs, scams, lost data, illegal immigrants etc. Is there anything not left? Decentralization means storing the database such that it isn't located at one place but distributed. You're implying anonymization which is the next step.

[b']Just look in this thread and check the mishaps with data taken place - fake IDs, scams, lost data, illegal immigrants etc. Is there anything not left? The scale of the project is so big that some mishaps will be expected and will happen no matter how well one plans. Its gov's duty to stop illegal immigration, but ones they have entered india and have procured a valid residence proof, there is no way for uid registrar to know whether the person is an immigrant or a citizen. Aadhar isnt a proof of citizenship anyways. If the extent of irregularities is reflected by only the cases of mentioned in this thread and no other cases, I'd say this has been a big hit so far. Regarding adding records or querying the DB, I believe it is quite safe - The UIDAI will not share resident data: The Authority envisions a balance between 'privacy and purpose' when it comes to the information it collects on residents. The agencies may store the information of the residents they enrol if they are authorised to do so, but will not have access to the information in the Aadhaar database. The UIDAI will answer all requests to authenticate identity only through a 'Yes' or 'No' response. The Authority will also enter into contracts with Registrars to ensure the confidentiality of the information they collect and store. https://developer.uidai.gov.in/site/ The postal department lost my aadhar, I just took its print out from its website which is as good as the original. One of my relatives needed address correction, he just uploaded the new address proof online and after a few months of validation, I believe the change was reflected and he printed the new aadhar. Its an ID which is valid across india for all purposes and its the future imo... Decentralization means storing the database such that it isn't located at one place but distributed. Crookbond Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 The scale of the project is so big that some mishaps will be expected and will happen no matter how well one plans. Mishaps? You mean coriander, biryani having an Aadhar card (IDK how the F they registered for biometric data) is a "mishap" or the loss of lakhs of biometric data is a mishap? That's not a mishap - that's plain jane stupidity. The moment the entire mechanism was decentralized to local vendors - the Aadhar project was bound to be doomed. It's important to do things "right" even if it means taking some time. What's worse is that the authorities know about the pitfalls but have a very cavalier attitude towards the same. If the extent of irregularities is reflected by only the cases of mentioned in this thread and no other cases, I'd say this has been a big hit so far. Sensitive systems in the world aren't evaluated by mere percentages. A spam detection system is heavily penalized if it marks a legitimate e-mail as spam. I hope you get the drift. Look into something called as F1 Score to understand more. There have been so many chinese hacker attacks and theft of data that is just plain pathetic! Conversely, I wanted to get a print out of Aadhar guard of the security guard at my work place and I have been trying since 30 days now. Despite showing the enrollment status as "Done"; the poor chap is unable to get his Aadhar card.
