Is Agarkar one of the ODI greats of this generation?

He got to 50 ODI wickets faster than any other quick bowler. He got to 100 ODI wickets faster than Akram, Hadlee, Pollock, Holding, Murali, Kapil Dev, McGrath and Kumble. He also got to 200 ODI wickets faster than a lot of those names. Only 133 matches to the landmark, whereas Akram needed 143, Ambrose 146, Murali 147 - McGrath took the same # of matches, but Agarkar took fewer years/days. His ODI strike rate is also 32.9 That's better than McGrath, Warne, Pollock, Akram and many other so-called greats. (Many of whom may only be hyped up by Brits and Aussies, if you check with achilles) And if we pick random opponents, he had a better average than Akram vs. Zimbabwe (who were a quite respectable side back in the 90s with guys like Flower, Flower, Houghton, etc) or Sri Lanka (who were World champions in the 90s). Maaaaan. What a player!

Who cares how many matches Ajit Balachandra Agarkar single-handedly lost for India in the latter half of his career with his buffer bowling? That is absolutely irrelevant.. But in all seriousness, he was a very fine ODI bowler in his first couple of years.. Superb outswingers in his first spell.. Deadly inswinging yorkers.. (yea, its been a long time since we saw that from an Indian bowler is it not?) in the slog overs.. Even though his test numbers are generally pathetic, he was the ONLY Indian bowler to make any sort of impact during the 1999-2000 Aussie tour. Ended up as our top wicket taker in that tour and even made the Waugh brothers his bunny.

Thal, Mocking TAV apart, if you look at the ODI squad of today (excl. ZK who also struggles on certain days in ODIs), we would do well to include TAV in the 15-squad. Ishant or Nehra or Munaf Patel or RP Singh are not bringing anything better than TAV and with better fielding TAV (and IKP) are better bets for ODI. New guys like Tyagi or Abhimanyu Mithun need a lot more time in domestics. We need a :tav: smiley :P

It could be argued that econ rates are only higher because of differences in eras, players these days having a lot better/stronger bats designed for bigger hitting, and more flat tracks and small boundaries in ODIs. :winky:

I think he is our best odi player and deserves a place in the side. I will pick him over Sreesanth and I.Sharma, he does picks up wickets but gets expensive at times too. Right now we need bowlers who can give us breaktrough as economy rate doesn't matter because our batsmen have the talent and skills to post 300+ total in most games.

It wasnt Anal was it ?... it were Blade im sure. To be fair to that Lillee thread, we have watched Aggy and know what he can and cant do, having not seen the likes of Lillee etc we can wonly but speckyoulate based on stats. Its a fun thing to do.
