Mr. Wicket Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Precisely. I find that to be true for most countries. Europe, as they maybe in their shortcomings, have atleast got this right. I believe India is doing fairly decently in this aspect as well. Defence spending is approximately 2,5% of the GDP. If they could lower it to around 1,5% in the future years with increased GDP it might be even better. There is absolutely no reason to spend on WMDs. The true and fair question to ask is, whether we would ever use a WMD? I would never support the use of a WMD against anyone. Gunner: ever heard of the classic game theory scenario called the Prisoner's Dilemma? The issue with WMDs is basically the same thing. Each person expects the worst possible outcome for them based off others' actions, so takes a decision that doesn't let them benefit and makes everyone else worse off. In this case we're just talking about everyone being equally paranoid re. everyone else, and wasting money that could be allocated far more efficiently.
Clarke Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Precisely. I find that to be true for most countries. Europe, as they maybe in their shortcomings, have atleast got this right. Thats because Europe sits under the security of NATO or more precisely the American umbrella. Twice in the last century, it needed massive outside intervention to restore normalcy. If America did not provide the security cover it did post 1945, Europe would have had a massive arms race to survive against the USSR which frankly had the ability to run through most of Europe in case of another war. Defense budget - thanks but no thanks. Both neighbors we fought wars with and have disputes with us to this day, maintain a bigger percentage of their GDP as defense budget. India should not reduce it by any means for quite sometime. Talking of WMDs, India having fought a war with a much larger China earlier, needed something when China exploded a 3.3 megaton (!) thermonuclear device as its sixth nuclear test in 1967. India generally maintains a no first use pact but our adorable western neighbors, on account of their love for humanity, refuse the same. To think of it, if the third reich had managed to produce a nuke first, the world could've been very different. A world without WMDs .. i'm not sure how it would be. For starters, there would be far more conventional wars with no WMD deterrence. btw whats the thread title again :icflove:

Riley's Girl Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Absolutely fair to have different opinions. We can't always agree on everything. :winky: Agreed. This is one of those debates (much like religion) that neither side will ever win. Much better to respect your right to a different opinion from the outset, than to cause animosity in our happy household over a matter we can't resolve or agree on.
Riley's Girl Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 Sree: What was your friend thinking? That kind of opportunity doesn't come your way twice in one lifetime. The defence sector is something I'd support every day. War is a reality & human nature will never allow it to cease. I'd much rather have a fighting chance than be a sitting duck.
EnterTheVoid Posted March 18, 2010 Author Posted March 18, 2010 Here's wishing you a good career in that field Thanks, its such an awesome feeling being part of the defense.

He didn't want a career in the defense. I recall the following conversation I had with him some time ago; ------ Me; Why don't you apply for a job in the defense ? Gunner_Mania Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 A simple question about what one does for a living escalates into NATO, Australia's Defence, WMD, Europe..blah di blh di blah, but not more than one or two cared to answer the OP's original question (me included). This happens only on ICF...to the tune of This happens only in India:aha:
Roshanrocks Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 yes....... just today morning i asked my friend a question about wether he is brinnging his wife over to the UAE... somehow along the way 2 to 3 people joined the discussion n it turned in to a major love vs arranged marriage debate.... the debate then headed towards culture differences when our bosses came up n broke the debate.... then the topic moved to koream marriage cultures hahahahha really funny it was

It comes down to an individual choice based on what you can live with.
