NEW DELHI: Shashi Tharoor on Sunday night resigned as Minister of State for External Affairs after the high-level Congress Core Group decided that he should quit in the wake of controversy over the IPL Kochi franchise, capping a week-long drama that threatened to suck the government and the party into it. 54-year old Tharoor, a newcomer to politics from international diplomacy, was summoned by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to his residence late tonight and asked to tender his resignation. "Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for External Affairs has submitted his resignation from the Council of Ministers to the Prime Minister today. The Prime Minister has forwarded his resignation letter to the President with a recommendation that it be accepted," PMO spokesman said tonight. Shashi Tharoor drove-in to the PM's residence and handed over his resignation to the Prime Minister. Tharoor went to Singh's residence in the night in a car without the red light unlike in the morning. According to TV reports, the MoS for the external affairs was asked to resign by PM Manmohan Singh. Apparently, the decision to ask Shashi Tharoor to resign was taken in the Congress core committee's meeet. The nearly two-hour meeting, held at the Prime Minister's House at 7, Race Course Road, was convened to decide the party's action on Tharoor's future in the government. The meeting discussed continuance of the minister in the wake of controversy over allotment of sweat equity of the value of Rs 70 crore to his friend Sunanda Pushkar by the IPL Kochi franchise. Tharoor got into serious problems after IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi revealed that Tharoor's friend Sunanda Pushkar had equity stakes in Rendezvous Sports World (RSW), heading the consortium that owns the Kochi team. It was later disclosed that Pushkar got sweat equity of the value of Rs 70 crore RSW following which the opposition has been gunning for his removal on the ground that it was misuse of office for pecuniary gain. That Pushkar today offered to surrender the sweat equity and to quit RSW failed to convince the Congress top brass which met at the residence of the Prime Minister in the evening to finalise its strategy before Parliament resumes tomorrow after the week-end. Earlier in the day, Tharoor met the prime minister for 50 minutes to present his side of the story over the IPL controversy involving him and close friend Sunanda Pushkar. Besides Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her political advisor Ahmed Patel, home minister P Chidambaram, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and defence minister AK Antony were among those attending the meet. Party sources said Gandhi was unhappy over the entire development and leaders feel that Sunanda Pushkar's offer to return the sweat equity amounted to admission of guilt. The Core Group is also believed to have discussed the damage wrought by the controversy to the government and the party and that a decision should be taken in a way that the party could face Parliament. Parliament was paralysed on Friday with the opposition demanding Tharoor's resignation. It had also given enough hints that it would continue to rock Parliament on the issue if Tharoor was not not sacked. Tharoor, a writer and a former Under Secretary General in the United Nations, earns the dubious distinction of becoming the first minister in the UPA-II to go under the cloud of corruption charges. The continuance of Tharoor, a first time MP from Thiruvananthapuram who courted controversies throughout his 11-month stint, became untenable in the government ever since the IPL controversy exploded.

Ok did not watch the news so long due to the matches but now switched to a news channel after reading ICF and saw this news .. BTW they are saying BJP is now saying that Congress has accepted guilt by Tharoor's resignation .. they were at first asking for resignation for the last few days and now they are now saying that Congress has accepted guilt with Tharoor resignation .. Congress getting pwned now :rofl:

BTW they are saying that Manmohan was given a report by finance ministry where he was found guilty of misusing his position of a Minister in the IPL controversy :hmmm:

The 'Empire' will take revange..It will come hard. Already their media mouthpiece Barkha Dutt yapping the need for a 'Regularity committee' to 'regulate' the BCCI/IPL and bring in more 'tranparency' like the way Govt. Sport bodies do their business.. I think Kalmadi or MS Gill will be brought in the 'regulate' BCCI/IPL. There's few score also to settle with Narendra Modi and Lalit Modi..
