Greenhorns for a critical tour of SA :headshake: Why cant Umesh Yadav and J. Unadkat be played on more India-A tours first??? Let them gain a lot more experience first. If UY and JU have to play in a Test in SA due to injuries to one or more of our regular pacers, we will be so screwed in SA. The inexperience can hurt. Really poor selection. We need backups in the squad with a bit more experience. Nothing against UY or JU, just that they should not be rushed like this.

And with the lack of depth in a historically weak dept,its not surprising these things happen. The more senior alternatives are not exactly srinath or kapil dev and they often have a poor attitude(like rp singh and munaf towards fielding.). nothing wrong here on this count.,

I am not too thrilled with Umesh's selection so early either... although he has bowled the odd fast balls...his average speed wont be that different from Ishant/Sreesanth . Besides who are we kidding- Saffers probably have more than half a dozen bowlers in their domestic scene who are quicker than Umesh, plus they face Steyn and Morkel in the nets. Does Umesh swing the ball both ways ? Is he disciplined ? - I am afraid the answer maybe no for both counts. Even sir Aggy may have been a better pick than Umesh at this point. Umesh,Unadkat need more experience under their belt.

I agree. SAffer batsmen have seen many such UY type phaasht bowlers. So, unless UY gets more experience and develops variations and control, he is not going to be able to do zilch against SA batsmen. Very baffling selection. Selectors must have been drinking spiked :pepsi:

What was Ishants record before being picked? How many FC games etc had he played etc etc? They picked him on potential and talent and speed. It worked as for bowlers sometimes they grind of FC cricket in India and other countries can kill the pace and development of pacers. Just look at Harmmison and Jones of england who were also picked with not much FC experience. Pacers often develop better on international circuit then in domestic cricket

Unadkat operates in the 130s anyway..not considered 'quick' by international standards

Munaf must hve been close. But selectors gone for players who will improve and can get them in squad and improve them. I think its good call

If there are chinks in Unadkats bowling action or delivery or whatever it would bve vastly better for him to iron those out whist bowling for state and not get carted around by Smith and co for it to come to light. This is where him being too young is an issue. I think thats a reason so many of our pacers start so well only to go downhill- Pathan, RPS to name two came into the game far too young. Great that Rudra came back after he was dropped for a whiel, but hes faded again now. Ishant has not exactly lived up to his early promise either and experts like Prasad are pointing to chinks in his bolwing action that have crept in- just bolwing lots in domestic cricket under the far less harsh spotlight can help clean those out so when they come to play for India they are much nearer the complete article and can actually perform (which is what we expect from senior pacemen, not that they spend a few series just learning) Mentally they are so much more hardened having experienced match pressures and the like in Ranji cricket. I hope Unadkat does well but just dont want him to start brightly and fade away like so many others before. Shudder to think that he is one minor injury to a main bowler away from playing for India. Mithun should be in this squad and maybe Munaf, not Unadkat and Umesh.

Munaf > Umesh Yadav, Only if Munna ji changes his laidback attitude and he will be in Indian team with no effort as the bar is very low

why r we so desperate for bowlers who ocassionally hit 140s that we ignore other factors like swing,line n length,bounce,variety.Umesh has nothing of these.ocassionally hits 140s n is on average mid 130s only. I still PK,Tyagi(bowled well in recent match:P),Kulkarni, would've been better options

Munaf of the 2005-2006 versonh had a future in test cricket.but not munaf of the subsequent years. the curent version has no future whatsoever.

Mentally they are so much more hardened having experienced match pressures and the like in Ranji cricket.

when the talent stocks are high, this works. With the kind of fast bowling stocks we currently have, people are going to be picked early.that's how it works there was no point going to any of the pacers tried earlier.hence newer people can as well get experience. ishant and sreesanth are the only ones talented enough to be kept in the loop.

on the bouncier decks, you have to hit the deck hard.pk and kulkarni won't fit anywhere except nz and england probably.and with zaheer and sreesanth around , they are not needed. umesh is developing the incoming delivery at the moment and more importantly he hits pace with economical effort. there is potential there.

I think that the hype over Umesh Yadav is largely unfounded upon evidence. He can bowl at 145kph in T20s' date=' with short spells but mainly bowls at 135kph - England have a host of bowlers who do this and are not international standard (Saj Mahmood, Liam Plunkett, Steve Kirby, Amjad Khan, Mark Turner, Chris Wright, etc). Pace does make it more likely that you will succeed, but unless you are bowling at 150kph, speed is no substitute for experience and First Class/List A wickets. He has 42 FC wickets at 21.95 which is good, but in the Plate League, so not fantastic and when we are talking about OD recognition, it is irrelevant. His OD stats are poor, with 10 wickets at 44.60 with economy of 5.11 - if he really was a genuine express pace bowler, the numbers should be a lot better than that and he was shown to have not nearly the control for international level against Zimbabwe.[/quote'] hey MAN.. i told u umesh is a good bowler and u can see him in the INDIA team in tests now..good chances for him to come into 11
