But when the tall and sturdily-built Umesh Yadav sends down his deliveries, they are clocked at over 90 mph more often than not. Two years ago, the Vidarbha pacer hadn’t even touched a leather ball, and today he’s the fastest Indian on display in the IPL circuit, and one of the reasons behind Delhi Daredevils’ breaking their three-match losing streak against the Royal Challengers Bangalore last Thursday. Behind the 22-year-old’s pace though is an extraordinary story. "I first bowled with a proper cricket ball in 2008 in a club cricket match. I was contemplating becoming a policeman and my friends had told me to play that last match before joining the force. I didn’t do particularly well on that day but Vidarbha Cricket Association officials were present and they were impressed," Yadav told this newspaper on Sunday. "They called me for Under-22 trials and days later I was playing in the Ranji Trophy." He played four matches at the first-class level that year, taking 20 wickets, including a six-wicket haul against Bengal. Three months after his Under-22 debut, he was playing the Duleep Trophy, where he castled Rahul Dravid, and finished with figures of 5/96. That prompted a call from the chief selector Kris Srikkanth. Yadav, whose father works at a coal mine on the outskirts of Nagpur, broke stones as a kid. For him being a cop was a way to get his family out of the clutches of poverty. But having proven himself in cricket, he wants to climb the ladder in a hurry. "I want to be in the Indian team by 2011-12. It’s a big challenge for me, but If I keep performing like this I can get there." The signs are promising, even though he has just 11 List A games to his credit. Yadav didn’t have the best of starts to his IPL career — bludgeoned for five fours by Matthew Hayden’s Mongoose bat in his first over of the tournament. But he came back with a hostile spell in the Daredevils’s last match against the Royal Challengers, taking 1/27 in his four overs. "I haven’t played enough matches to know what pressure is. Hayden batted superbly in that game, but my job is to just run in and bowl fast." Yadav has also consistently outpaced Dirk Nannes in the three games he has played so far, and has been labelled an India prospect by Daredevils coach Greg Shipperd. "He’ll play for India soon I can assure you that much. He gets the bowl to bounce from good length, which is disconcerting for every batsman. He also has a beautiful inswinger which is his stock delivery." "If he keeps his feet on the ground, he’ll do well," Shipperd told this newspaper. Yadav reckoned that it won’t be a problem for him. "I’m a son of a miner. I knew Pakis were into a lot of drugs but did not think you would be smoking it all the time to make such lame statements .. Dinda has hardly ever bowled 130s and Umesh Yadav has been bowling 145 continuously in most of the matches this IPL and that too with good accuracy and without putting any effort and a very short run up

I always keep my feet on the ground." :adore: :adore::adore::adore: I really like his simplicity of thought .. just hope he keeps his feet on the ground even after becoming a star in the future The things I like about his bowling are: 1) He bowls 145K nearly consistently 2) He does not put any effort even for bowling 145K 3) He does not need a large run up to bring him the speed 4) He has got a clear round arm action instead of the chucking or slinging actions like other phaast bowlers 5) He has never learned any formal bowling and yet he is so effective I just hope that he is given his chance in the Indian team soon and he does not lose his feet from the ground.

The ideal time for him to make his debut would be the SA series in SA, till then let him geta feel of international cricket through an India A tour to England scheduled in July-August.

Kisaan beedi? Dinda has hardly ever bowled 130s? :hysterical: He was consistently bowling b/w 135-140k's in this IPL. And he has improved as a bowler.

That is something which I have never seen from an Indian bowler. Often their pace from one game to the next which they claim has something to do with their 'rhythm'. But this guy is different in that aspect. Has an action that repeats itself every single delivery. Yeah but strictly speaking his fastest ball to date is 145.9 kph. And I would say he is consistently above 87 mph...still he is head and shoulders above any current Indian seamer in terms of pace.

I know he is quick, but not that quick... yeah he de finitely he is..I watched a few matches solely to see this guy bowl.. Him and Kamran Khan are huge prospects for our team..(atleast for the limited overs format)..just keep them away from the MRF "Pace killing" Foundation

I hope we are able to divide bowlers based on potential so that the best ones (or with greater potential) play primarily tests and only key limited overs (ODIs/T20s) tourneys like the world cups or ICC events, while others or back up bowlers play all those bilateral ODIs/T20s series/tri-series or whatever

SRT195 Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 he is definately a very good prospect ... has all the ingredients required for a fast bowler being tall & strong (not like ishant tall & skinny:haha:) ... also works up nice pace & consistently bowls yorkers :two_thumbs_up:... i hope like all Indian pacers he does not start with a bang & fizzle out later ... he needs to play domestic cricket for some time & also send him to Ind A tour to diff countries ....
