zen Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Exodus ----> a 1960 film staring Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint about Jews and Arabs in the British controlled Palestine. The film starts at Crypus where European Jews are kept in camps (and stopped from getting in to Palestine to keep Arab population there happy) as they have no homeland. Newman, a Jew, organizes for over 600 Jews to be smuggled out on the ship Exodus to go to Palestine. The British stop the ship from moving out of the harbor but a hunger strike by those on the ship forces Britain to allow the ship to go to Palestine Then the film focus on different forces in Palestine and how they think they would get the homeland for the Jews. Some believe in diplomacy, while some believe in violence The film is long but a must watch. Newman delivers a very fine performance. May be I will try to get hold of the book (best seller of its time) "Exodus" too :hatsoff:

Also, the police station scene near the end when the two Bahadur's keep meeting the rich/mean Ashok. :hysterical: My favorite scene is actually the train scene with the detective-reading Ashok. That's hilarious Sanjeev Kumar acted really well.

The Outsider Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Watched and loved Ishqiya. Brilliantly made - right from the camera work, the dialogues, and the acting. Great to see Vishal Bhardwaj's genre being exploited by other film makers as well, though this was produced by Vishal. Had a spaghetti western kind of feel to it, set in eastern UP. Certainly not easy to pull off. Some of the dialogues of course are getting the highlight, but for me the most remarkable aspect of the movie was the camera work and angles used during the movie. The use of shadows is terrific and the number of close up shots of all actors is a testament to the great job done by all. Could have made it another 15 minutes longer by developing the relationship of Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah a bit more. But I am not complaining if Bollywood produces more movies of this quality and class.

Apart from that liked the movie. saw another great movie 'Harischandrachi factory' (indias entry for this years oscars) simple movie abt how dadsaheb phalke went abt making india's first film A nice light hearted film. Marathi movies are surely improving.
