DomainK Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Watched "Sherlock Holmes and the last vampyre". Its a bad version of the original brilliant story of "The sussex vampire." Brett is too old and fat to play Holmes in this one. He was wonderful when he was young, but this movie was obviously made quite late.

Hollywood creates a world, has some rules and follows those rules. There are plot holes and goofs but it never meanders into the awfulness that is the Indian film industry. The problem with Indian movies is that they never create a world or establish the rules. If a guy living in a normal world, we expect him to be normal more or less. I really cant fathom a normal guy beating up 20 other guys in a matter of punches and kicks. Movies are all about fantasy and they can take literary freedom to create this fantasy in the audiences mind. I cant enjoy movies when they dont. That is why a stupid movie like Kung fu hustle/Pineapple express is more intelligent than a Ghajini.

Others that I would recommend are Gandhi my father, U, me aur Hum and Bhool Bhulaiya. Rest are cheesy movies. Would not recommend to anyone esp. Akshay Kumar's movies as he as gone too far in making really crap movies after getting 'popular' (barring bhool bhulaiya).

Just a few problems i remember from the tamil version , First the world established is the real world. Amir/Surya is no superhero. So no matter how bulked up a guy is, when you punch someone, he doesn't fly 20 feet. If the world is not normal, the movie didnt establish tht. Second, it was established that he can only remember 15 minutes at a time. This keeps changing. I dont expect it to be 15 minutes exactly but towards the end, it ranges from very high to very low(movie time). Plus he doesnt forget everything he learned. If my memory is correct, his mind resets when in the middle of the climax fight but he still manages to kill the bad guy without knowing why he should or who he is. Basically, the movie takes its own rules and kicks it out of the window in the last 1 hour. In Short, too many inconsistencies with its own rule and world.

Graphic, people who are disappointed went in with high expectations because of the fact that Aamir was starring in the movie. If SRK/Askhay (off late) were in this flick, it would have made sense as they have completely effed the Indian film industry by working in cheesy movies. Ghajini is a lift off Memento's concept (sure its made in a 'different' way). Sometimes I wonder how popularity messes one's head. Akshay's movies were entertaining and made sense when he did not charge an arm and a leg to work in movies. Saif Ali khan's only noteable performance was in Dil Chahta hain and from there he gained fame and picked movies like Tashaan, Race and what not.

I think the fights are never believable in any movie - apart from Anniyan, possibly. I think the only thing he does remember is the murder - but it depends on how you understood the movie. Its not worth discussing about. In the Hindi version, I thought Murugadoss did a better job with this aspect than in the Tamil version. The climax was very disappointing in the Tamil version - I agree. The last 1/2 hour is different here but its not anything superbly awesome or anything. The thing is - its just for entertainment - Aamir chose this role just like he choose Fanaa, where he could show off his histrionic skills. Nothing more. Nothing less. I thought Asin did a good job - a little better than in the Tamil version. Perhaps, I didn't think the movie was too bad because I knew what to expect.

Thanks Blue Brigade. I think #3 was just "Black" - Amitabh and Rani? But, thanx for the Black Friday suggestion - I'll add that to my list. I think Bhool Bhulaiya is what came out as Manichitrathazhu in Malayalam and Chandramukhi in Tamil (ofcourse some variation will be there in each language re-make). I'd like to see how Vidya Balan has done, so I'll watch it sometime. I'll check out the list you mentioned above. PS: Update: found some more info on the web: Originally Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif were the first female choices for this film but they turned down the offer due to the film's irksome comedy style and were replaced by Vidya Balan and Amisha Patel.[2] Vidya Balan had to take Kathak lessons for this film. Incidentally, Vineeth played the exact same character in the Rajnikanth-starrer Chandramukhi in 2005 which is one of the respective remakes of Manichithrathazhu. Here, he reprised his role. The original story of the film was written by Madhu Muttam. Though he claimed this film as a violation of copyright, the High Court of Kerala allowed the violation of copyright, in light of the production cost. The film came under a cloud of controversy after a Buddhist organisation objected :hmmmm: to the title song in the movie as disrespectful to venerated icons.
suraj Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Black Friday is a must watch!!!One of the best movies in recent times U me aur hum was a good effort specially the second half. Gandhi my father was also commendable effort. I found Welcome enjoyable if you don't start thinking with your brain (entertaining but silly- time pass) Everything else in finey's list was crap IMO except maybe Jaane tu..... which may appeal to teenagers but was not for my agegroup.
