Irfan Pathan for T20

Can someone explain me why the love for him.I fully agree with the selectors on not selecting him at least for now. You will say his batting is good. Ok fine, but what is the use of that in our indian team, if he plays, he will bat at least 7 down so what is the use of his batting. Even for his battings, he will do only some pitch hitting, which is good but there is already harbhajan or our other bowlers like jadeja who can do that. Next, his batting is good but is it good enough? I do not think so, his batting does not have the ability to change the match by playing a good solid long innings for the team rather than quick runs which can done by our other bowlers. And finally if he is to be selected for batting, there are far many batsman out there whom have proved their class in FC cricket. Next more importantly, his bowling is not very good. He relies on swing which is not a bad thing. But with that, he will not have enough pace. His performes have shown it has gone for runs as well but is overlooked cuz of his batting runs. And we already have 2 left arm seamers whom i think are better, so why select another. So 9/10 times, nehra and khan are better bowlers and there are many better batsman than him waiting for a chance in our team. So where does he belong and on what basics he should be called. Although with the world cup, the lack of confidence on our 2 fast bowlers might change a thing or two.

Him and Venkatesh Prasad can give each other a run for their money on setting the record of being the only bowler in the history of cricket with the unique ability of having a run up faster than the speed at which the ball is delivered.

It is all comparative. He has won a Test for us in Australia. He was the star of world T20 final. He has produced match winning innings in his career. It is kinda picking less evil. Irfan is definitely better than some of the specialist batsman we have. Zaheer is a terrible T20 bowler. I would rather have Irfan Yousuf is just not a cricketer. I would rather have Irfan Jadeja.. sucks in everything. I would rather have Irfan Bhajji. Can't take a wicket for life. I would rather have Irfan.

Given how our bowlers have done in odis, dont think having Irfan as the 3rd seamer will be a bad idea. He is better than his elder brother and Jadeja as an all rounder. Perhaps the closest we have to someone being an all runder in the country.

9 So Irfan is not a good player but he depends on how India team plays. If bad, then there should be changes and he should be given a chance. So he is not a first team player. And why are using the above names, they are only hindsight. If Zaheer is a terrible t20 bowler, then Irfan is a much terrible t20 bowler. Also Zaheer is without doubt much better than Irfan in other formats. Next Yousuf, okay there is a point, I agree but again Yousuf is really a match winner, he can win you a match out of nowhere. Jadeja, he is good bowler, look at his records in ODI or his last 6 months records bar this last t20. And Bhajji may not take wickets but at least he is not giving runs and thus is making batsman nervous and under intense pressure, but it is a pity that this pressure is gone away with bad bowling from the other end. Also if Bhajju, Jadeja are to be replaced, they would be replaced by spinners not a medium pacer. Their competition is with spinners.

It is not like his batting would be used at the top but more so at the end so his batting is easily replaceable by our own current bowlers( bhajju, jadeja) See my first post and the above post to understand more.

he's still bowling short, when he pitches it upto, the areas are wrong definately, shouldn't be looked into as his bowling is concerned his feilding is average never seen him take a high catch batting is decent which is not required from him, until he bowls well

In the last 20 ODIs played by various leading Indian bowlers here's the stat Nehra - 156.4 overs, 28 wickets@ 34.82 at a eco rate of 6.23 Zaheer- 174.0 overs, 22 wickets@43.4 at a eco rate of 5.5 Ishant- 143.5 overs, 26 wickets@35.3 at a eco rate of 6.4 Praveen-138.3 overs, 19 wickets@40.7 at a eco rate of 5.6 Bhajji- 186.4 overs, 29 wickets@30.9 at a eco rate of 4.8 Irfan- 168.4 overs, 25 wickets@39.4 at a eco rate of 5.8 Now for runs scored by our lower order batsmen (who bat at no 7 and below) in last 20 odis played by them Irfan 200 runs @ 17 at a SR of 88 Praveen- 145 runs@18 at a SR of 80 Bhajji- 121 runs@12 at a SR of 72 Batting stats of Zaheer, Nehra and Ishant in their last 20 odis isnt even worth talking about. Now look at those numbers in totality and you would "understand" that Irfan has been as good or as bad as any other Indian bowler barring Bhajji(all are within +/- 5% of each other). The fact that Irfan can get you some quick runs in the lower order when you need or he can be sent in as a pinch hitter, makes him the ideal 3rd seamer for us (and we have gone in with 3 seamers in almost every ODI under Dhoni). having "understood" this point, go back to what I said "Given how our bowlers have done in odis, dont think having Irfan as the 3rd seamer will be a bad idea and see where I was coming from.

I disagree mate. Jadeja, Zaheer, Yusuf are not at all reliable T20 players. They can actually lose more matches for India than win it. Yusuf won only one match for us . In the same match Irfan played very well as well. Best Indian bowlers in T20 http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=3;team=6;template=results;type=bowling Best Indian batsmen in T20 http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=3;team=6;template=results;type=batting Tell me how exactly Irfan is inferior to other players.

Okay, lets get stuffs into perspective, You are talking about T20 not other formats regarding IP. Well, the problem with your thinking is just because IP has done 1-2 good innings some years ago, he should get chance. The current form and situation do not lie and clearly Jadeja, Zaheer, Yusuf has been better than him. For example, YP has shown more in the last year in batting as well as better bowling than Irfan who has remained a decent batsman but becoming a worse and increasing predictable and frustrating bowler.

In case you haven't noticed IPL tamasha is over. :hysterical: On topic, Irfan and Uthappa should be in contention for the number 7 spot in the ODI line up. Irfan, the bowler, might be of limited use but as a batsman he is one of the cleanest strikers of the ball and has a technique which does not fizzle away at the sight of some good bowlers.

Explain to me. IRfan is a far more reputable batsman than Yusuf in every single possible way. Yusuf is no more than a darter with his bowling. How is Jadeja better than him? What has he done to India in terms of match winning? He didn't do 1 or 2 good innings More than that. Being a 19 year old he negotiated Mcgrath and Gillespie for more than 4 hours to save a match where all his illustrious seniors flunked, handling the pace and bounce at Perth to produce a match winning 50 , or opening the innings against Srilanka to deal with Murali to make 93. Tell me in one format where Yusuf is better than Irfan. He is not even a proper cricketer. He is just a cow slogger. Here is a sample of what he is capable of with bat. http://www.cricketarchive.com/Archive/Scorecards/98/98945.html

The contrast between Yusuf's cowlashing and Irfan's batting was so stark in the T20 last year against Sri Lanka. Yusuf cowlashed some runs off a club level spinner, but as soon as the faster bowlers came on he was not able to get the ball off the square and it was Irfan doing the hitting off Malinga and Fernando. Yusuf is a pathetic batsman. Not only does Irfan have a test century, he has played so many important innings against genuinely good and great bowlers like Murali, Johnson, Lee, McGrath, Warne, Akhtar etc. It's a joke to compare the batting abilities of Yusuf and Irfan. Yusuf is good for knocking around the pathetic bowlers which feature in IPL, he should be made to stick to his area of expertise and never be considered for a spot in the international team.
