The plight of Manipur

The blockade of two national highways in Manipur by Naga groups entered the 55th day on Sunday and the prices of essential commodities remained high. Hundreds of trucks are still stranded. The All-Naga Students' Association launched the blockade on April 12 to protest against elections to six autonomous district councils in the hills which, it alleged, were given not enough powers to carry out development works. However, the Manipur government has denied the charge. The blockade, which was intensified after Manipur refused entry to NSCN (I-M) general secretary Thuingaleng Muivah on May 3, has throttled the regular supply of essential commodities, pushing the prices up. A litre of petrol now costs Rs.120-Rs.150, onion Rs.28 a kg and rice Rs. 26. The exorbitant prices apart, many essential items were not available, official sources said. Before the blockade, 300-400 trucks transported the items on the highways 39 and 53 daily. On May 12, the Manipur government decided to bring hundreds of stranded trucks, loaded with essential items, from Silchar to Imphal, through Jiribam, a distance of 212 km, by providing them with security. However, the authorities used NH 150, from Silchar to Imphal, through Aizawl, a distance of 512 km. One can only hope that these groups do not gain the strength as the Maoists or the LeT.

The only way out is the economic one, so you see NE students in various parts of India trying to make their living. Things will change massively in the NE when trade with SE and East Asian countries opens up big time.

its a shame we ignore all these states.the rest of india seems to have forgotten them.i remember reading an article sometime back where people in the east were demanding their own time zone because the had sunsets at 4 pm(losing a lot of daytime) ,that request was ofcourse ignored too.

eh?.we are talking about time zones here.people are losing a valuable resource(sunlight) because there is a 2 hour difference between east and west india.they have sunsets at 4 pm over there.

sorry was responding to a post before you about them declaring independence. regarding separate timezones, it is not an easily implementable system in a country which has lived with a single timezone.

If they can change names of cities and airports' date=' is this such a big deal?[/quote'] well they are unrelated issues, not what all mess they had to go through to change names. sticking to timezone, it has to start with updating windows to support it, referring to IST everywhere else including places one didn't have to mention time + timezone. it is a pain and not worth doing it unless there are real benefits. the resource is better spent in solving more important issues, IMO.

you save tons on energy consumption if you have if you have 2 extra hours of sunlight.if you really want to save more energy then they should also adopt daylight savings in the summer across the country,sunlight till 8 pm would have been awesome while i was growing up.
