Having said that I think he has the makings of a quality spinner as well, but being put into the international arena so early might end up hampering that development.

Debutants usually play well against Pakistan so they could make things tougher for Pakistan. We will be giving debuts to our promising young guns too so hopefully they will impress.

I know he has been selected due to his spin abilities, but if he wasn't so good with the bat they would have given the spot to somebody else.

One of the fastest bowlers in the world, Tait has not played a first-class game since 2008 after struggling with physical and mental exhaustion and he announced last year that he was giving up four-day and five-day cricket to concentrate on the shorter formats. But the late drafting of the 27-year-old into the ODI side to replace injured spinner Nathan Hauritz has added a new level of menace and life to the attack, leading Australia's captain to say he would try to talk Tait into returning to first-class cricket. "I will be talking to him about that, yeah," Ponting said after his side's 78-run win over England at The Oval. "I'm sure a few of our boys will be having a whisper in his (Tait's) ear over the next few weeks." Although he has been injury-prone and his bowling has often been erratic, Tait is valued by his teammates for being able to shake up even the most confident of batsmen. He joined the ODI squad after it had lost the first two games of the five-match series, taking 3-28 in the next match at Old Trafford which Australia lost by one wicket to concede the series. At The Oval, Ponting again used Tait in two-over bursts and he recorded 1-23 from seven overs while keeping England's previously dominant batsmen literally on the backfoot. Ryan Harris was the pick of the bowlers with 5-32 from eight overs but Ponting said Tait had added something special to an attack that had been criticised as lacking "the X-factor". "Our attack in the last couple of years has been (Mitchell) Johnson and (Brett) Lee so we have always had that firepower and if anything we just lacked a bit of zip in the first few games and lacked the ability to be able to get the batsmen off the front foot," Ponting said. "Taitie has obviously come into the group and been able to do that for us. "Even today his first over (which conceded seven runs) probably wasn't his best but he came back really strong. It's just nice to have that firepower and that wicket-taking ability through those middle overs."

Stringbean 202cm South Australian quick Peter George – the latest bowler to be touted as "the new McGrath" – was flying to England to replace injured Ryan Harris. George, 23, will almost certainly carry the drinks in the first Test against Pakistan at Lord's next week, with returning quick Ben Hilfenhaus set to be unleashed in tandem with Johnson and Doug Bollinger. For Johnson, the Lord's match will be a moment of truth. "I got the tattoo three weeks before I travelled away so that ruled that out," Johnson said. "I felt like I bumped it on the plane but I'm not 100 per cent sure. It started off as a little sac of fluid and progressed from there." Johnson believes the heavy injury toll among Australia's best fast bowlers over the past 12 months may have been a blessing in disguise as it has helped uncover Australia's depth, such as Bollinger and Harris. "We've got a good bunch that has been able to rotate in and out of the side," Johnson said. "Looking to the future we've got a pretty good squad at the moment. "We have started to make a stamp on how we perform as a group."

On Tuesday he is back at HQ for Pakistan's re-arranged 'home' clash against Ricky Ponting's Aussies. Johnson said: "That Ashes experience was very frustrating. I was going through a few personal things at the time. I was spraying the ball about. But I have learned from it and proved to myself I am a better bowler."
