Pujara waiting for the big day Nikhilesh Bhattacharya, Hindustan Times Kolkata, July 17, 2010 Cheteshwar Pujara believes the tons of runs he has scored at every level and format of the game have left him on the verge of a national call-up. However, unlike Dav Whatmore, his coach at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), he sees no reason to question the selectors. “My job is to score runs and I have done that to the best of my abilities and the selectors have seen it,” the right-hand middle-order batsman told HT. Four of the five national selectors saw Pujara lead India A and amass 776 runs in 10 matches on the recent tour of England and Scotland. Split in batches of two, Yashpal Sharma, Narendra Hirwani, Raja Venkat and Surendra Bhave covered both the four-dayers and the limited-over matches. “I think I am on the verge of being selected for India, maybe for the next series. That’s how I am preparing myself,” Pujara said. Whatmore has said Pujara should have been picked for India’s ongoing tour of Sri Lanka ahead of Yuvraj Singh. Instead, the 22-year-old will play in the Emerging Players tournament in Australia next month. However, Pujara is confident his time will come, his belief strengthened by his performance in the tri-series in England, a country he had never toured before. The India selectors usually blood youngsters in ODIs and Pujara’s chart-topping 332 runs scored against quality attacks of England Lions and West Indies A will stand him in good stead. India A lost the final to England Lions. Pujara also hit a double hundred in the four-dayers against West Indies A. India A won the two-match series 1-0. “It is important to score runs in all formats,” said Pujara, who overcame a slow start to play some important knocks for KKR in the third edition of the IPL. It was a step-up for Pujara, whose campaign ended before it started when he tore a ligament during a KKR practice tie. “Pujara showed tremendous temperament and focus on tour,” said India A coach and former India batsman Pravin Amre. “He was by far the best of the lot,” said a selector. The lot included Tamil Nadu’s Abhinav Mukund and Mumbai’s Ajinkya Rahane, who scored more than 500 runs each on tour. “I cannot comment on selection matters, but Pujara has certainly stacked up the runs,” the selector added.

Pujara for Yuvraj and Dhoni's attitude as captain I know this topic has been discussed to the death but there are lots of better test batsmen than Yuvraj, someone like Pujara should have had played this game.Selectors have been arm-twisted into selecting him when the captain of the team says before the start of tour he is indispensable. When dhoni was just handed over the captaincy I really liked his style but now I find him to be too stubborn. Moreover he does not believe in team building. We cannot hope to have some one like Imran khan who virtually picked Waqar and Akram out from streets but we at least deserve someone like ganguly who sent out for rebellious harbhajan when he was about to give up his cricketing career and head over to Canada to drive trucks over there.Guys like sehwag, yuvraj, kaif flourished under his leadership.Leader of the pack is someone who picks guys better than him to work for him.I cannot see this happening with dhoni who is so set in his ways. Ganguly might have been a terrible player, a sloth at some point of time in his career but he had some great qualities of a leader.Dhoni is a great player, perhaps the greatest wicket keeper batsman India has ever had but he is not perfect when it comes to the leadership.Yuvraj is perhaps great one day player but his style of play is not cutout for test matches. Ok,enough rambling thoughts from me.I just read my post and it seems that I have done my best to invite wrath from dhoni fans, yuvraj fans and ganguly fans :D. P.S. Yes , I do need to change my ID new_cartman to something more original :D.

I doubt that, I think Pujara may have jumped ahead of Raina in the list. I don't think Raina is being looked at as a test player, more of a limited overs specialist, though I do hope he does get a chance at some point. Yuvraj needs to go, fair enough everyone flopped, but seriously looking at how rich in batsmen we are in India, I can't believe this guy is still holding a spot in the team

I think as long as Dhoni is the captain of the Indian Test team, Raina is always going to be around. Pujara is a better player in Tests and has better technique too.

So according to you guys Raina doesn't deserve to be in the team?

Dont get me wrong. Raina Offcourse Deserves chance ahead of Yuvi ( Mahi's BF). But Pujara would be an Ideal Replacement.

Well to be honest Yuvraj for the first time looked good in test matches ,except for murali he played all other bowlers comfortably and with murali(his nemesis) retiring ,i think he will do good in coming tests in sl

Nobody's going to be dropped. I hope they appriciate that and don't take their place in the team for granted.. The same team will play. At the most Ojha might make way for Mishra...

I just realized the subject of the post is not the most appropriate.IMO, Dhoni's attitude these days is cause of worry for indian cricket. To standby your conviction is different thing but not to see the writing on the wall is another.Pujara-Yuvraj is just one example of his i-can-do-no-wrong attitude.Jadeja saga before this. I hate to say this but Dhoni seems to lack the big vision we Indian cricket fans need from our captain. As I type this India has lost the match inside 3 days in subcontinent with three big ones still playing for india.

not Pujara,i would give the chance to Rohit first, then Kohli, then Pujara n then Raina but ofcourse Yuvi needs to go.Cheeka is doing exact opposite.both Yuvi n Raina were picked:hehe:

Yes. Agreed. But he's the Captain and has lost only his 2nd Test match ever as the skipper. So no one is going to utter a word against him (I guess) in the selection panel.
