Dinesh Karthik IMO has been given chances lately and has proven himself once in a while- but the problem is he doesnt get the big scores. He could have cemented his spot by now, but again most of the times he has lost his wicket in search of quick runs for the team's cause. I would still say he should be ahead of someone like Rohit Sharma. That said, if they find someone more consistent than these two thay have to make way for him.

Karthik is talented no doubt. But it begs the question - are there no more talented specialist batsmen than him in the country? I think a lot of the time he gets an upper hand because he has been there at the international level and his wont be the case of butterflies in the stomach.

Besides that there is also the case of him thrashing the domestic bowling attacks when he turns for TN or South Zone, The guy has scored 10 first calss 100s in 17-18 matches he's played in the last two seasons and has made those runs in crucial encounters! SOme of his recent performances in domestic cricket: 1. 183 vs West Zone in Duleep trophy final, his team struggling at 76-3 2. 152 vs Orissa in Ranji troph 2009-10 3. 117 vs Punjab in Ranji trophy 2009-10 Besides these he scored 88 vs Gujarat and 70 vs Himachal Pradesh. Now considering he played only 7 first class matches in the domestic season, thats a remarkable record. Mind you he was also the captain and the keeper for his side in all these matches.

That's a fantastic record...I knew he'd made some big FC scores but didn't realize he'd been so prolific

Impressive domestic record no doubt. But if that were the yardstick then Badri would have had even better years in the past couple. I just think picking Karthik as a specialist batsman may send the wrong signals. He is a very good wicket keeper batsman. If he is picked over a specialist batsman, then that guy should be angry. He ought to do better. Make no mistake. I am not under-rating Karthik. I think he is a fantastic talent. Still...I would like for him to be picked as a keeper-batsman than as a pure batsman. If he comes in as a batsman, then I do not think it speaks so well of the rest of the young batsmen around the country. Again no slight meant towards Karthik.

I think hes picked as a reserve keeper/opener.I dont think he'll bat in the MO n not keep.then other batsman wil be picked hes a utilty guy as I said.dont think he refuses to anything the captain wants, captains love to have such guys on the bench

Not really. If you look at games he has played in, he has featured only as a specialist batsman, almost all the time. Dhoni keeps wickets. And Karthik comes in to replace a full batsman. That is the concern.

48, 34, 44, 79, 11, 40, 66, 14, 10 his scores as a specialist batsman in 2010. 348 runs in 9 innings at an avg of 38, 2 50s and 3 40s for a makeshift opener and someone who comes in only s a replacement player is not too bad. Should ideally have been sent to It would have been good for him had he converted these starts to a bigger score and I am sure no one knows it better than him

He is basically one batsman who doesn't have distinct weakness from a technical standpoint.
I think Karthik will be very happy looking at this post, vvs! He has quite a few weaknesses. Starting from his propensity to stand outside the crease and launch onto his front foot from there. Will not work on bouncier pitches against faster bowlers. This also means that he is always pulling on the move. Looks good when it comes off. Even spectacular. But not really percentage. Not unless you can do a Ponting on that one. Otherwise he is a reasonably compact batsman. I am not impressed by his temperament though. He still has the temperament of a non regular batsman. And that is a huge problem.

True. And one of the biggest reasons is that his temperament is not where it should be for a top order player.

How is this any different from what I mentioned to start with? He is picked as a specialist batsman! He is not keeping.
